What's "normal" to "normal people" today is what's written into scripts and/or advertised on major TV networks. Things that are "okay to have" can be obtained by consumers with dollars in a conveniently located, well-lit, industrially air conditioned sanitarium--a temple of goods and services.
There's no servitude anymore, even in the service industry--even in the service. It's not overtly about serving the greater good, protecting borders, staking nations' human life in battles against conflicting interests. It's "do something amazing" and "an army of one".
