I'll be practicing this year. The nature of the practice is changing. For you drummers out there, think of this: the power of one note. in the past, I have focused on narrative, tone, dialogue, dynamics, sound color. Now I am thinking in terms of distillation. Imagine the distillery mash tun, teeming with micro organisms and grain slurry, fermenting. All that complexity gets strained, concentrated, aged, and finally presented as one killer glass of Lagavulin!! This is great drumming too!!
All the years of a persons life playing music are in some sense presently overlapping each other, orbiting, mutually enfolded in muscle memory and that persons overall perspective. We have access to it all now. It's a wider field than ever, and it's widening. But it needn't lose specificity.
I want to move people emotionally, so I'm listening for that moment of opportunity. From all the possibilities, I want to find that deepest node, and trigger it. It's a common crossroads for everyone involved. It's person-universal.
Now THAT"S a power trip!!!!!!! WooHoooo YEEHAW!!!!!!

Hope you can forgive as it technically was the morning when I first heard The Saint, but it does make for quite an enchanting sunrise melody too! Beautiful and intricate piece, reminds me of flowers :)
