When I got off the Martha Wainwright '08-'09 tour, I had a "creative/constructive meltdown". After 29 years of playing drums for some of the greatest artists ever... I just KNEW: I couldn't get to that next stage without taking some quasi-absurd artistic leap. I had spent so many years developing my craft so that I could put on a great show as a drummer, making bands sound great, that I felt like I had lost touch with something essential. In short, I wanted to explore vulnerability. In order to do that, I knew that I had to take myself out of my area of expertise. Easy enough... I picked up the guitar, and three months later: CAGEFIGHTER was born!!!! .. .. For all the lovers who've lived and lost: Raise your heads up, and walk on. If we keep looking to our tragic past, we'll not hear the rustling crackle of the new. That thought, that intuition of freedom, it's YOU!!! Follow!!! .. .. For you drummers out there: Listen to me. We are a creed. We are the transmitters of the pulse of all life. We all spent 9 months inside, close to the breath and heart of the One who would love us most perfectly. Then we were born. We face each other, rarely recognizing ourselves in one another. But we face the same primal hopes and fears. We seek the same resolution to the mysteries inherent in the incompleteness of our human cognition. We drummers are the shamans of trance. And we are the soldiers who rouse mens courage in battle. Remember your mothers heartbeat. Contact your source every day. Commit to the path!!! Let your pulse be heard. The spirit of the trees that made your drum shells, the metals of the Earth that made your cymbals, the air that transmits the sound, it's all part of the life that is within you. .. .. All the years of a persons life playing music are in some sense presently overlapping each other, orbiting, mutually enfolded in muscle memory and that persons overall perspective. We have access to it all now. It's a wider field than ever, and it's widening. But it needn't lose specificity. .. .. I want to move people emotionally, so I'm listening for that moment of opportunity. From all the possibilities, I want to find that deepest node, and trigger it. It's a common crossroads for everyone involved. It's person-universal. .. .. Now THAT"S a power trip!!!!!!! WooHoooo YEEHAW!!!!!! .. .. Happy New Year!!!!!!!! .. ..
