I am a percussionist and multi instrumentalist. I teach rhythm and drumming to individuals and groups. I work with the community using rhythm and music to make good things happen. Moments of joy through music. I am currently working with people with disabilities and I have a long history of working with young people especially young people from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds.
Music heals in many ways. Through the sound itself. Through self expression. Through changing our states of consciousness. Through providing a meaningful form of non verbal communication. Through engaging both hemispheres of the brain in many and various ways. Through providing a bonding mechanism for groups of people.
I specialise in Egyptian style percussion. My classes are inspired by the rhythms and playing style of Egypt and are for everyone who'd like to experience the beauty of shared music.
The classes aim to develop
an ease in playing style
familiarity with a rich rhythmic language
improvisational techniques which allow for freedom of expression
The drumming style used in class is largely inspired by my study with Egyptian drum master Ibrahim el Minyawi who has collaborated with founder of Hilal Dance, Suraya Hilal for many years. I also draw on my experience with classical, folk and rock music depending on the context.
I work with The Mozaic Dance Company as musician/composer/performer with dancer and choreographer Sarah Hamilton who has trained extensively with Suraya Hilal and who performed with The Suraya Hilal Dance Co in early 2008.
