DS: Public Domain is a break-beat group created by Brian Smith (a.k.a. John Malcav) of Dilated Summit and the Georgia Guitar Quartet. The group was designed as an offshoot project of Dilated Summit and is more heavily immersed into electronic music. The music teeters on the edge of the public domain spectrum by using very small sample sizes to create music that sounds very different from the original song sampled. Brian borrows from a huge variety of music to showcase the many influencers of his style. Listening to DS: Public Domain, you will hear classic beat scrambles with the “Amen” beat and “Funky Drummer”, newer scramble segments from local artists like Kyle Dawkins and J.J. Bower, and a huge variety of popular, classical and jazz samples. The music forms a tapestry of sound that has elements of both the old and the new to create a sound that is distinct.
