I haven’t updated my myspace in a while so here’s a new bio.
I grew up in East Vancouver in the Grandview Neighbourhood around 1st and Commercial. I’ve moved in and out of the hood, but never out of my city. I never really thought I would leave my city, or province for that matter (cuz who doesn’t have family up north?), so when I got off the plane at Schiphol, on my way to Portugal, I was beside myself to say the least.
Musically, I was never far from an instrument but my musician father was definitely far. At least until I was 13 anyways. That’s another story though. At age 5, my mom seeing my need to play, enrolled me in guitar lessons. That came to end when I wouldn’t practice. I think it hurt my fingers. So we tried again when I was about 9 and enrolled me in piano lessons. Those didn’t last too long because it impeded my time with my friends after school. I couldn’t be having that shit. So those came to an end, but not after learning some music theory and rekindling my passion for learning more. The next year in school (Grade 6) our school was sponsored by the Bentalls’ (some rich mofo’s) and we got a bunch of instruments and sweaters to wear so we look good playing the instruments. My mom wanted me to play a flute cuz she thought it was quiet but she didn’t know any better. My music teacher (shout outs!!!) Miss Beedom wouldn’t let me play flute without clarinet experience so I did a couple of weeks of clarinet until they realized they didn’t have any flute players so I got a promotion. And for the final two years of elementary, I showed up early for probably every band practice, sometimes at 7:20 am (which when your 11 is pretty early to be at school) and won the award for best musician. I moved on to High school where I continued to play the flute for another 2 years while picking up another instrument. Baritone Sax. I continued on to tenor sax, senior band set up to do amazing things musically and then got kicked out of school.
End of Chapter 1. Stay tuned!
