Duchampions' Crush of The Week: 'Shamps Dad - rare interview
Duchampions are Belfast's indie-rock art-school chess-clubkids - Ros Blair, Russell Matbouli, John Macormac and Paul Scott - established May '07. Duchampions' namesake, Marcel Duchamp, godfather of conceptual art, abandoned the term 'artist' in 1917, after creating his infamous urinal. He switched his interests to cross-dressing and playing chess. And why not? Being duchampian is about being polymorphous - imagine the voice of Diamanda Galas, the arch lyrical wit and high camp of Morrissey, the wardrobe of Siobhan Fahey and the shoes of D. Boon, all mixed up in a Gus Van Sant movie with Tom Verlaine's high treble guitar, Tadzio's lonely-hunted hairdo, Calvin Johnston's beat happening and a bit of 'jeez, I can't find my knees' international Bobby D. Duchampions have just finished recording 'The George Miles EP' at The Blueroom in Donaghadee. Outside of the 'Shamps Ros records as a solo artist for Berlin label Supersoul Recordings and her first single with Supersoul 'Moon Unit Part 4' is now featured on a new compilation from James Murphy's prestigious New York label DFA entitled 'Nobody Knows Anything' out on August 25th, 2008. She also runs the online Artists' Collective 'The Ben McAuley ApSoc'. John is Belfast's superlative boygod drummer and rising art star. Russell is a fuzzy guitar bear and D.I.Y. record producer. Paul is like Tina Weymouth except even better 'cos he plays a six-string bass and he's training for a charity boxing match so he could beat your fudd in.
The Present is the new music project of legendary New York musician and producer, Rusty Santos (Panda Bear 'Person Pitch', Born Ruffians 'Red Yellow & Blue', Animal Collective 'Sung Tongs')
"This record is pure instinct with no attention paid to belonging. It is raw intellect and emotion. The Present is indeed both GIFT and NOW. Open you ears and your mind will follow. God Bless this record for teaching me that." - Brian DeGraw, Gang Gang Dance
This will be our final gig, and what better way to go out than sharing a stage with one of our favourite bands? Thanks to all the people we've worked and played with over the last few years; we hope we've turned some frowns upside down...we've certainly had so much fun it probably should've been illegal! I think it could be summed up best by one of the great thinkers of our time, Mr Vinnie Jones: "It's been emotional..."
We're doing 'Scratch My Demo' on Tuesday evening at the Oh Yeah Centre. basically we'll be playing some new tunes live, and the idea is we discuss it with the audience. And discuss other things like where we should be aiming for, image, the works. Would be great if some of ye could come down and give some honest feedback.
