WEEDS: New CD Release by David Ducharme-Jones
Weeds, a new CD release by Guitarist / Singer
David Ducharme-Jones, (pronounced doo sharm) is an eclectic mix of originals and favorites showcasing
his soulful vocals and jazz-infused blues guitar. He shines on the album opener, Golden,
written by Ducharme-Jones, a bluesy ballad with a haunting, laid back groove, warm vocals, and lyrics that
encourage us to stay in touch with our inner child as we make our way in the world. The second track, Talk
to Your Daughter by bluesman J.B. Lenoir, is a straight ahead shuffle performed flawlessly and
borrows from versions by Robert Palmer and Robben Ford. Another original, Goodnight Roy B., is a
nod to Jeff Beck’s ‘Cause We’ve Ended as Lovers’ tribute to Roy Buchanan. The lyrical melody and
BuBeck-ish inspired telecaster riffs call upon the spirit of Roy B. Say What You Want is a memorable
funky, R & B tune written by Rod Chaffee, a guitarist from Des Moines, Iowa and an early influence on
Ducharme-Jones who also grew up on the south side of Des Moines. Dartanyan Brown (Marisha Publishing, former bassist for Chaffee, Grover Washington Jr.,and Rickie Lee Jones) said "The track bristles with energy." Ducharme-Jones’ faultless
instrumentation on his version of Red Baron by Billy Cobham incorporate his feel for mid-tempo fusion.
Cobham’s Spectrum album was the first time Ducharme-Jones heard Tommy Bolin’s guitar playing, another Midwestern influence. Track six covers Bolin’s
Savannah Woman staying faithful to the original versions arrangement using Wes Montgomery-esque
octave and single note guitar lines and a wistful vocal delivery. "When I first heard it I thought it was one of Tommy's outtakes that I hadn't heard before, it really captures the essence," described Johnnie Bolin (President of the Tommy Bolin Archives). Lootin’, jointly-written by Ducharme-
Jones, bassist David Evertson and drummer Michael Kopp, evolved from jams played at gigs when they
would improvise through a full set, This was a recurring theme that we would embellish over time.” says
Ducharme-Jones. Track eight, Left Undone, by Ducharme-Jones and Andy Van Dyke, was written for the
band Rainravens’ the best of Rainravens (Bluerose-Records), rocks with a little Cali country and sing-a-
long chorus. Moving Mountains, written by bassist David Evertson, features the ‘in the pocket’ rhythm
section of Evertson and drummer Michael Kopp. The last track I’m a Ram is a guitar driven version of an
Al Green classic and rocks the album to a close.
