I’ve been influenced by music and artists from every era, creed, and walk of life. I enjoy discovering songs that happen in every day living. I carry a recorder wherever I go. Whether I'm listening to the sounds out in the woods or take in the roar of the city, the universe has a way of offering new musical opportunities in my every experience. I listen to the inner voice within me and feel I am guided by Spirits and Angels. I've been at this process for quite some time and found a lot of love in my approach. I can thank every creative soul in my top 40 and every artist and friend who is not. There are so many to thank that can take credit in connecting my music to the universe. It's one that continues in guiding me forever towards doing what I love and finding love in what I do.

"Welcome To DM Country" was recorded at Duke's home studio that he invested a dollar at a time over several years while working Construction. Whether you label his music Southern Rock, Country Rock, Free Streaming CRock ("Krock" which is streaming Country thoughts and Rocky rhymes directly from tongue to tape using a DSS recording device), Country, Alternative Country, Americana, Folk, Folk Rock, Blues, Country Soul or Rock 'n' Roll, Duke's music comes with it's own territory and "DM" branded label he call’s "DM Country". "Purple Sky Outlaw" was recorded and mixed like an early 60's record in one weekend to feature Duke’s storytelling and turn that old school method of making a record into a modern day setting. The songs were written and finished in about a month after the death of his father and were put to rest the minute they went to tape. Duke wanted to capture the sound of "The Iron Range Region" of Northern Minnesota thanks to Bobby Zimmerman and to pay tribute to his father and the working class people he associated with that mostly had to struggle all of their lives to keep their family's head above water. This record features Duke singing and playing harp and guitar while engineering his own live tracks from his studio in LA. Duke Michaels is an intriguing figure in the country world. He doesn't walk the Nashville line of pop-ready songwriters churning out hayseed bubblegum pop for the CMT set. Duke Michaels brings a unique mix of country and rock and roll to the table; a modern take on old country attitude and grit. Michaels writes thoughtful and thought-provoking songs full of real grit, love, loss and determination.
"Welcome To DM Country" is a strong offering as a co-debut and should do much to establish Michaels as an artist of import. "Purple Sky Outlaw", stripped down, it shines as a diamond in the rough. It's a thing of beauty to behold and solidifies Michael's position as a great songwriter and performer. You'll want to own "Welcome to DM Country" in your collection. There once was a little boy who had a bad temper. His Father gave him a bag of nails and told him that every time he lost his temper, he must hammer a nail into the back of the fence. The first day the boy had driven 37 nails into the fence. Over the next few weeks, as he learned to control his anger, the number of nails hammered daily gradually dwindled down. He discovered it was easier to hold his temper than to drive those nails into the fence. Finally the day came when the boy didn't lose his temper at all. He told his father about it and the father suggested that the boy now pull out one nail for each day that he was able to hold his temper.
The days passed and the young boy was finally able to tell his father that all the nails were gone. The father took his son by the hand and led him to the fence. He said, "You have done well, my son, but look at the holes in the fence. The fence will never be the same. When you say things in anger, they leave a scar just like this one. You can put a knife in a man and draw it out. It won't matter how many times you say I'm sorry, the wound is still there." A verbal wound is as bad as a physical one. Friends are very rare jewels, indeed! They make you smile and encourage you to succeed. They lend an ear, they share words of praise and they always want to open their hearts to us."
