Garret Swayne and Tracy Newman & the Reinforcements in another two headliners for the price of one night. Friday, December 11. $15 7:45 PM
As a troubadour for the Digital Age, Garret's songs are a chronicle of his life and times. If there's a unifying theme to his music, it's about Connection--the idea that we're really all of one heart when we get beneath the surface. This is evidenced in the warm reception he receives wherever he performs. Originally from Baltimore, he has traveled the nation and the world, charming audiences throughout the UK, Germany, Switzerland, Scandinavia and even the former Soviet Bloc with his one-of-a-kind brand of Americana.
His compositions, delivered with a supple, silken voice reminiscent of, say, a James Taylor, seem to touch a universal nerve. Whether it's the hilariously clever ode to Internet dating, "Email Female," or the heart-wrenching regret of love lost in "Do Roses Come in Blue," Garret's country blues-tinged compositions dig deep--and touch the listener even deeper.
"It's always been about the song", says Garret. "I've always admired songwriting craft above everything else." So from Gershwin to Lennon/McCartney, Carole King to Smokey Robinson, Paul Simon to Sting to Kurt Cobain, it's always been the great classic tunesmiths that Garret considered his heroes. Their genre of music didn't much matter. Garret's unique, country-rock "folkabilly" sound was forged from a number of different sources--Classic Rock, Motown, R&B, the Folk Tradition, The Blues, and a little, Country Western.
Tracy Newman, the sister of Saturday Night Live’s original cast member - Laraine Newman, is a television writer and producer. Her first writing job, along with her partner Jonathan Stark, was on staff at Cheers. From there they wrote on a number of other sitcoms, including Bob, The Nanny, Hiller and Diller, and The Drew Carey Show. In 1997, they won the Emmy and the prestigious Peabody Award for co-writing the “coming out” episode of Ellen.
Tracy has been a songwriter throughout her television career and recently released her first CD, “A Place in the Sun.” (www.cdbaby.com/cd/tracynewman.) She works with two other singers – Gene Lippmann and Lorie Doswell, (www.loriedoswell.com.), who together are the Reinforcements. Tracy's song "Waffle Boy" is a winner in the 8th Annual Great American Song Contest. (scroll down their page) It was selected one of the Top 5 winners in the Special Music category. Tracy's song "Mama, I Know You Ain't Santa," which she co-wrote with Lynne Stewart, has just won second place in the prestigious Unisong contest, in the category of Seasonal/Specialty Songs. In addition, a few of Tracy's other songs have received honors at Unisong. "Hands off the Phone" is an Honorable Mention in the Folk/Acoustic category, "Cowboy" is in AAA/Alternative for an Honorable Mention, and the lyrics for "The Boy Who Mans the Waffle Irons," is one of the top 20 under the Lyrics category.
The great Corrine West (if you like Alison Krauss, you'll love Corrine) February 28, 2010 -Sunday. $15 Sunday, 4PM
There's magic in Corinne West's voice. It aches and breaks. It soars. It's clear, penetrating and washed in emotion. When she wraps that voice around songs as sublime as those on her latest CD, Second Sight, she's spellbinding. That's because she's unlocked the secret that so many singers spend entire careers looking for and never find.
"She writes great songs, plays with top flight musicians, sports a killer voice and oh yes, has sultry good looks- she could easily be cast as a princess in a "Lord of the Rings"-type movie (hopefully a singing part)" Americana Roots.com
"West, who took to the road at the tender age of fifteen is a masterful songwriter, winning awards at Kerrville Folk Festival. She has a distinct voice with echoes of another Californian, the late Kate Wolf. Educated on the streets West has a raw sincerity in her lyrics and her singing." Montrose Daily Press, Colorado
More on the series.
After almost 10 years of hosting professional contemporary folk/singer-songwriters near LAX (and receiving coverage on CNN), the series has been transplanted to our new home in east Ventura, California.
Duncan House Concerts is in the eastern part of the town of Ventura, between Santa Barbara and the LA Valley. Address and directions are provided after receiving an RSVP for a show.
Please note:
"Duncan House Concerts" is simply the name we choose to describe our private parties, in our private home. These parties are NOT a business nor are they a business related activity. They are strictly a hobby for us, and are simply gatherings of our friends and guests to enjoy live acoustic music, fellowship, food (sometimes wine) and fun. Our concert parties are officially free (or else it might be considered a business), although voluntary contributions (suggested donation of $12-18 per person depending on the show) are accepted at the party on behalf of the artists. 100% of all contributions go directly to the performers. The events are by invitation only. However, it’s easy to be invited to the parties, so contact us at scottd13@roadrunner.com
The concept behind this performance venue is simple. We provide our home and the artist performs for people truly interested in hearing them in a very casual (but music friendly) setting. The end result is that concert attendees hear a great performance, share food and drink, and make some new friends. The artist plays to an audience that really cares and gets to make some money. ...and we all have a great time!
Reservations are required, so please RSVP via email to scottd13@roadrunner.com (preferred) or call us at 805-323-5157 (leave msg).
