In frankish mythology, upon Roland's defeat at the hands of the sarracens, he attempted to destroy his sword to prevent it from falling into their hands. When striking the mountain, Durendal breached it and created "La Brèche de Roland".
That is what the name conveys. The will to stand and prevail, against enemy or stone.
