Dutty Desi aka Field Slave-
Contrary to popular belief, Dutty Desi has always Deejayed, Roots , Reality, Culture and Humour only.
Anybody who was into the UK Dancehall scene back in the 1980s will know Dutty Desi (Dirty Desi). Growing up in Jamaica he went to Kingsway High School and then Meadowbrook. He first started to MC at the age of 16, and one of the first sounds that he MC’d on was a sound called Arrows Hi Fi, along with his friend Alton Irie. Even though it was only a thirty second burst it was the greatest thing to him at the time. His friends gave him the name ‘African’ and that name stuck with him until he arrived in England. He started to MC on a sound called Galaxy International from Kingston and was also in a Dance Group called Underworld which would travel to schools in Jamaica and perform dance routines. In 1981 he arrived back in England and contacted Dennis Row from Saxon Sound. They knew each other via their families.
Desi along with an MC called Rankin Coley were the first MCs on Saxon as a Dancehall Sound. Papa Levi soon joined, and then Trevor Sax who use to sing and finally Maxi Priest, the rest is history. He left Saxon after he, Ranking Coley, Papa Levi and Trevor Sax had won 3 Sound System Clash Cups. He went on to MC on three more Sounds, Revolutionary Sound, Ghetto Tone and Frontline Sound System. In 1984 Desi recorded his last single called 'I ain’t got no work today’ which sold well in the first week of release but then suddenly stopped. Desi decided he would gather up all copies and send them to America where they sold within 1 week.
After this he did not record another record for 16 years. Desi was once asked how come it took you so long to start recording again? To which he replied ‘because I don’t need music to eat anymore’ .
His first recording was the single: Sexy like a Bottle of Pepsi in 1983. He has recorded over twenty singles, three EPS, one Album and featured on two live dancehall Albums.
I am a man of few words until music starts playing. So I would like to post a few words of encouragement to those who may read this post. If you are out of work, lonely, depressed, broke, or just down for some reason. .......BE strong, fight the fight, keep your head up high; take a minute and just smile. When we look down the road we cannot see around the corner.
