Alianza – The National Latino Alliance for the Elimination of Domestic Violence is dedicated to helping society recognize and end domestic violence in Latino communities by promoting education, ongoing dialogue, public awareness, networking and advocacy.
Alianza is 1 of the 5 National Domestic Violence Cultural Institutes and the only 501c3 non-profit organization/institute offering advocacy, education and services geared towards the unique needs of Latino victims.
We represent a growing national network of LATINA and LATINO advocates, practitioners, researchers, and activists. We evolved in 1997, eventually opened office in 2000 in New York City and in January of 2009, moved our location to New Mexico.
Alianza is aware that abuse can exist in all groups, but that Latinas face more barriers than non-Latinas. Latinas often have taboos regarding their sexuality, gender role issues and the importance of ‘familia’. A strong sense of culture keeps them from ‘betraying’ long-standing values. They believe their family obligations always come first no matter what personal animosities may exist. In Mexico, there is a law called ‘abondono de hogar’ which punishes women who leave their homes, even to flee violence. Women convicted of ‘abandoning the home’ often lose custody of their children. Women who are deeply religious may believe a violent spouse is their ‘cross to bear’. (taken from Mujeres Latinas en Accion)
According to NALEO, since 2000, 1 in 2 new US citizens is of Latino origin. Spanish is also the 2nd most common language in the US. With a growing Latino population, it is more important than ever to have an experienced National Institute specializing in culturally appropriate services on the issues surrounding DV in this segment of the population.
TRAINING- Although our offices are located in Downtown Albuquerque, we are national in scope and also receive requests from surrounding countries. We collaborate with State Coalitions and various DV programs that serve Latino families in order to enhance their knowledge and skills. We organize conferences, workshops and other training forums at the national and international level and offer advocacy, education and services geared towards the unique needs of Latina victims. We travel in order to deliver the best hands-on and face-to-face conferences, workshops and training forums on a multiplicity of issues related to DV and Latinos including but not limited to religious and language barriers, best practices, outreach and we tailor our presentations around the concerns directly related to YOUR Latino community. So call us today! We will come to you!

WORKING WITH MEN AND BOYS-Alianza believes our work must also include concerted and committed strategies for working with our Latino boys and adolescents and therefore provide information, resources and services in this area.
ADVOCATING-Alianza helps to formulate policies and promotes the involvement or inclusion of Latinos for the allocation of adequate resources to help prevent and end domestic violence in Latino communities.
COMMUNITY EDUCATION AND DEVELOPMENT- Alianza’s goals in this area are to: raise awareness about domestic violence in Latino communities – its existence, prevalence, nature, and its damaging effects; provide information about rights, options, resources, and services. Alianza does this at a national level through the media, community forums, special events, and the distribution of materials.
TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE- Alianza receives numerous calls per week requesting technical assistance. Requests for assistance include but are not limited to: Spanish translation, development of research materials, statistics regarding the Latino population and DV, and print materials. Alianza has also developed a directory with a list of all the programs in the U.S. who serve DV victims (copyrighted). When fielding TA calls, it is helpful that Alianza is well versed in many Spanish regionalisms, as its support base runs throughout the country. Alianza is also well versed in other social issues that are interrelated with domestic violence. Therefore, our goal is to educate victims suffering ANY type of abuse and offer respite to those seeking a way out. All technical assistance calls/referrals are FREE and CONFIDENTIAL.
RESOURCE CENTER- Alianza resource center has linguistically and culturally materials: books, flyers, posters and many marketing materials on a range of topics on issues concerning domestic violence. All materials are in English and Spanish.

The Cycle of Violence MUST be broken before TODAY'S ABUSED CHILD becomes TOMORROW'S ABUSER!
TEEN DATING VIOLENCE is a serious crime in the United States.
Although domestic violence has devastating consequences in the Latino community, it does not respect race, nationality, ethnicity, gender, age, education, religion, income or sexual orientation. It can happen to anyone.
Dating violence is not only dangerous but devastating to the long-term health, welfare and future of our nation's youth.
In order to prevent it, we must educate and empower young people before they form their first relationships so that they can recognize the warning signs of abuse, understand healthy relationships and realize that some behaviors are not just wrong, but illegal.
IMPORTANT STATISTICS ON TEEN DATING VIOLENCE
1 in 5 teens who have been in a serious relationship report being hit, slapped or pushed by a partner.
1 in 3 teenagers report knowing a friend or peer who has been hit, punched, kicked, slapped, choked or physically hurt by their partner.
Abuse can also be verbal and emotional.
Young women between the ages of 16 and 24 experience the highest per capita rates of intimate partner violence, nearly triple the overall average.
Studies indicate a high correlation between dating violence and other juvenile delinquent behavior.
In fact, nearly 92% of girls who enter the correctional system report being victims of physical or sexual abuse.
Teen victims of domestic violence are substantially more likely than their classmates to bring guns or other weapons to school and 3 times as likely to be involved in a physical fight.
Abused girls are significantly more likely to get involved in other risky behaviors and are 4 to 6 times more likely to get pregnant and 8 to 9 times more likely to have tried to commit suicide.
