History
The Eagle Music & Media Academy
concept originally began in 1984 when multi Grammy nominated music
producer/executive Ed Townsend came to Mound Bayou, Ms with a vision to develop
youth for careers in the music and media industry. Current director Joe Johnson
who was a former student of Townsend’s reorganized the concept again in 1997.
Being an influence in the
music industry for most of his adult life and having been raised in the south
(Memphis, TN) Townsend took note of how rich the Mississippi Delta was in
talent and how this talent was being exploited by people from other areas who
had the necessary business and technical training that enabled them to
recognize the deltas’ talent as a fertile business opportunity. The deltas
musicians were not trained in business and only thought of their on music as a
form of expression and enjoyment. Over the years, the Mississippi Delta’s blues
has become known as the foundation of today’s multi billion dollar a commercial
music market. The place where it all started (The Mississippi Delta) is known
today as one of the most impoverished areas in the U.S.
The location o f Eagle Academy also
tugged at the heart strings of Townsend because of its Historical value. For
years African Americans all over the nation looked upon this town as an example
of what should and could be achieved by African Americans with proper
motivation, exposure, and expert training. Because of these facts, building on
the principles of the founders of Mound Bayou, Townsend chose to start the
organization in Mound Bayou so that area citizens could learn the technical and
business skills necessary to take advantage of its own talents and resources.
