It is horrifying that we have to fight our own government to save the environment. ~Ansel Adams

I am trying to start a nonprofit to cure the problem of cigarette pollution. While educating on the repercussion of the act of littering, this mission is to provide proper places for disposal. The goal is to make Public ashtrays that are designed to educate, but the key is to “shock and aw” the smokers by making this device from the cigarette butts itself. Of course there will be refining steps to remove all the bad chemicals. But through grants like the EPA's P2I2 Pollution Prevention and Education grant, they award funds that could be used to collect the litter. All in a plan devised to stop the gradual poisoning of our environment. This plan is to educate smokers and non-smokers that littering the filtered end of a cigarette takes there educated choice of smoking a cancerous product and carelessly taking the rights of the people around, to not absorb all the Bioaccumulotoxins that the cellulose acetate filter in which its designed to store. These chemicals in cigarettes after they have chemically modified by the burning of the tobacco, in turn multiplies the output types of poisonous chemical. All the filter does after improper discard, is leech into the grasses, storm drains, waterways, making them prone to wildlife and human interaction or ingestion. Already it is common for a local public utility to spend millions on the extraction of these filters from there treatment plants and the unclogging of the drainage systems. The environment is enduring priceless amounts of damages to just about every last known destination on this planet. One's habit shouldn't be tolerated if it affects everyone consequence! This nonprofit idea in theory would work like this: Any place that sells tobacco products, allows smoking in there establishment should be required or encouraged to enroll in the Cigarette Collection Program. Sellers could offer the RSA's “Home Units”, a program that uses recycled paint cans to collect filters from home and send them to the RSA. Existing local recycling programs could allow of collection of sealed cans. Smoking establishments could instruct all employees to collect in large 5 gallon recycled paint can and offer pamphlets of the program at the bars. This could also ensure better protection from accidental fires in regular trash.(many restaurants a year burn down for this reason.) Any Establishment that has traffic of smokers should apply RSA Bins near there entrances. These are self maintaining units, if enrolled in the program you will not have to collect, a service designed within the program to encourage adoption. Almost all commercial places could essentially use these PSR (Public Smoking Receptacles), and save financially for there site maintenance cost. With the point of entrance to establishments being the most common source for cigarette litter, it is essential for there to be proper places to comply to anti-littering laws. Responsible Smokers and/or Environmentally Responsible Populous along with Local and Community Beautification Projects could adopt this model to there cleanup and disposal activities. If we can collect the product(cigarette butts) we use to make the PSR we can perpetuate the effectiveness to the outcome. Our main goal is to eradicate existing cigarette pollution and educate to remedy the man made disaster in which irresponsible smoking has caused. Mission Statement To educate the public of the consciences to littering cigarette filters. Provide a solution to a disgusting problem. Remove cigarette litter from public areas and provide a place to properly extinguish smokers byproducts. To provide a service of maintaining of the public ashtrays. use ashtrays to educate of the environmental and financial damages to each state. inform public of whats in and leeching out of this litter. To upcycle the filters into a valuable resources to make responsible smoking facilities. To join forces with all and any litter prevention campaigns to improve thoroughness and effectiveness. To help alleviate the surge of smoking litter from recent public smoking bans. To Provide evidence to the public to convince them of the dangers of smoking and careless disposal, without pointing out responsibilities to manufactures, allowing consumers to do there part. To speak for the next generation, the ones that will have to live with our carelessness. To gain funds from EPA's P2I2 Pollution Prevention and Education grants and the like. To cooperate with localities' existing recycling programs for collection. To offer residential and commercial programs to help solve the problem. Ease cost of damages to local and state utilities. To offer extended protection again fire from merchants that allow smoking. The ultimate goal is to remove the cigarette butt from the leader board of collected items from national cleanups. To provide a way to save our environment from one of the greatest man-made disasters in history. Through a self-sustaining perpetual nonprofit organization; we can collect, detoxify, and re-manufacture the litter into public ashtrays. They should be treated like the toxic waste that they are: Turning cigarette butts (cellulose acetate) into public ashtrays that educate about the problem while providing a solution.

About me:

This Donation Button Finally Works, sorry for the Confusion Cigarette Butts!! Cause millions of dollars in damages a year, per city...I would like to investigate the relationship to the different types of cancers and there numbers to the invention of the filtered cigarette... Just think of the butt as a micro host to thousands of toxic chemicals...then think of the movie Erin Brocovich, about ground water pollution affecting surrounding residents..just think how many little doses of cancerous material everywhere do you need to have near your body till you get something from it?

The cigarette filter was invented in 1954, and from 1950 to 1960 cancer more than doubled...sited in these two references...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cigarette_filter

http://www.americanheritage.com/articles/magazine/ah/2006/5/2006_5_62.shtml

is it just coincidence that a product was invented that traps and stores toxins and the habit to discard them everywhere and the human impact to the cancer that it causes

"The ultimate test of man's conscience may be his willingness to sacrifice something today for future generations whose words of thanks will not be heard." Founder of Earth Day.

Responsible Smokers Act proposes, that the education of the Environmental and health impact of discarding cancer causing substances in the trillions a year needs to end. A solution is to make collection and education a key by making the collection bins out of Cellulose Acetate, the filter itself. If you make the product worth collecting or needed to and educate the dangers of the mishandling of this environmental disaster then maybe the big picture

Thank you for the friend's request. I admire and support your cause. Nothing personal against smokers, but it is bad enough when you run into second hand smoke and it gets in your lungs and clothes. Continue doing what you're doing.

Thank you for your suggestions, it is great to hear them.  Never thought of a heater core but will consider it.  I know the commercial coolers use cardboard, but there are many correct paths to the same goal. As far as the welder, I do not have experience welding so I think it is better left to someone who does.  The axle and flywheel are alluminium so it is heli-arc and I hear that is difficult.  As far as the hydroponic solution are you referring to perlite or something else?  I use a very small ratio of perlite, I have also been using styrofoam in the dirt for its moisture retention and to prevent settling and packing.  I hope all is well and wish you the very best friend.  I value your suggestions and look forward to hearing from you again.  Plants are much bigger now, misplaced my camera or I could show you.  Best of luck with your endeavors, let me know if I can be of assistance.
