Earthtone Solutions has been in the recycling business since early 2003. Our commitment to CURE Childhood Cancer dates to mid 2005.
We'd like to share some information with you, gathered from our experience, as well as industry surveys and statistics.
Recycling of printer cartridges and cell phones is a common sense issue. When recycled, printer cartridges and cell phones are kept out of land fills and incinerators. Less resources like oil are used to manufacture new ones. And with our program, money is raised to benefit pediatric cancer research, not to mention the fundraising benefits to schools, churches and non-profits.
Consider the following:
* Over 700,000,000 new printer cartridges were sold in the United States during 2005. 650 million were inkjets, and 70 million were toner cartridges. Each inkjet cartridge requires 2 1/2 ounces of oil to produce. Each toner requires up to 3 1/2 quarts.
* 86% of inkjets used in the USA are thrown away; that's 559,000 inkjet cartridges.
* Printer cartridges account for over 875 million pounds of ewaste each year. Stacked end to end, they could circle the world.
* Printer cartridges can be recycled on average between 5 to 7 times.
* The average life span of a cell phone is 18 months.
* About 130 million cell phones are thrown away each year. Hundreds of millions more are stored away, going unused.
* Cell phones contain toxic elements including arsenic, mercury, lead, copper, zinc, and flame retardants which can be released into the ground water if dumped in land fills, and into the air if incinerated.
* 2.3% of Americans recycle their cell phones. 7% throw them away. The same survey suggests that 90% would recycle cell phones if they thought it was convenient.
