About me:
Eastbourne Festival 2009 takes place from the 11th- 26th April and features a broad programme of exciting events which will take place across the town and include traditional, contemporary and experimental visual arts, music, literature, comedy, dance, film and performance elements. The festival provides both a platform for local artists and performers to showcase their work and also attracts the participation of regional, national and international artists, performers and entertainers.
The festival programme will feature, amongst many others, the following events:
Eastbourne Festival Live returns to the Winter Gardens after an incredibly successful first event. This year’s bill promises another amazing two nights of live music for the people of Eastbourne. Day 1 takes place on Friday 24th April, 6p.m.- midnight and sees the return of Radio 1 DJ Zane Lowe, alongside performances by the Maccabees, Friendly Fires, The Joy Formidable, Data Select Party and a host of local talent (Open to ages 14+). Day 2, Saturday 25th April, 10pm-4am is headlined by Andy C (Voted the world’s best Drum and Bass DJ for 10 years running), alongside a live set from Chase and Status, plus shy FX. Room 2 features house and electro from MASS recordings (Open to ages 18+). Tickets: Day 1 £16, Day 2 £12 available from: Eastbourne Theatres Box Office.
Marshmellow Night Art Trail:
The festival opening night sees the return of the Marshmellow Night Art Trail, an Alice in Wonderland and the Mad Hatters party themed event with a walking parade. The evening begins at 6.45 on Saturday 11th April on the promenade by the Life Boat Museum. The lantern and hat procession along the promenade leads to the main event on the beach adjacent to the Bandstand. The art area will be transformed into an Alice in Wonderland theme with light projections, installations, dance and performance art. The Beautiful Boudoir Bliss Chai tent will be creating a space for the Mad Hatters Tea Party.
Screaming Blue Murder Comedy Club at Eastbourne’s Winter Gardens on Friday 10th April (Doors at 8pm). With star of They Think It’s All Over Lee Hurst, this is a night not to be missed. Completing the line up are Karen Bayley and Andrew Bird, with Dan Evans as compere for the night. Suitable for ages 16+ Tickets: £9, Students £7, Groups 12+ £8 (Groups price includes table reservation when 12+ tickets booked and paid for at the same time) available from: Eastbourne Theatres Box Office
Blue Monkey Studio at The Redoubt Fortress:
The Redoubt Fortress will become a hub of arts activity for Eastbourne Festival 2009! The show, entitled CIRCUMNAVIGATION will feature new work from the Blue Monkey Artists, Wycliffe Stutchbury, Cat Ingrams, Alison Haddon and Judith Alder. In addition they have invited selected South Coast artists, Sharon Haward, Mike Newman, Sally Colledge, Grace Powell, Rowena Easton, Solveigh Goett, Terence Kershaw and Paul Bartholomew to join them in the exhibition.The work will respond to The Redoubt Fortress, its architecture and varied history and will include drawing, sculpture, printmaking, installation, photography, textile and text-based work.
In addition, the weekend of the 18th and 19th April will feature contemporary site-specific performance entitled ‘Navigators’ by Clare Whistler, with Sophia Ferman, Sam Barker, Lloyd Thomas and the all female foursome, The Gyg.
Admission: Special Festival admission charges from 11th to 26th April with a festival brochure: Adults £2, Seniors £1.50, Children £1, Family ticket £5. Due to steps at each entrance disabled access is limited. Please phone to arrange access for wheelchair users via a stairclimber if necessary.
Polish mini festival: A highly innovative concept, involving a number of events which aim to give local Polish people an opportunity to talk about their own lives, views and aspirations. ‘Poland by the Sea’ (Polska nad morzem) is an exhibition taking place at Eastbourne Station concourse (11th -26th April). The first public performance of Maria Jastrzebska's drama of confusion and conflict ‘Dementia Diaries’(Dziennik Demencji) will take place at Little Polka Café on the 21st,22nd and 24th April, 7.15-8.30 pm and on Sunday 26th April at 6.30-7.45 pm. £10/£7 concessions available from Little Polka Cafe.
Magdalena Reising and The Blue Café Jazz Band will be performing upstairs at The Lamb Inn on Thursday 16th April, 8 – 10.30pm for an evening of unique and charming blues-tinted jazz- coolly performed by top local musicians. On Friday 17th at the same venue, you can catch red hot fiddle and guitar music from Ben Paley (described by Folk Roots as “just about the best folk fiddler of his generation”) and Tab Hunter (guitar). Each event costs £5, and tickets are available over the counter at the Lamb during opening hours, or on the door.
