Interests

  • General

Breathing, reading, walks on the beach to view the smoggy sunset (thus clueless to the shards of glass and cigarette butts), witnessing the rise and soon precipitous fall of the American Empire, railing against the excesses of the aforementioned empire, cultural anthropology, comparative religion, cultural globalization, apocalypse, social justice, human rights, peace, and especially a good meal and a nap.
  • Music

Bob Marley, Hendrix, Zepplin, Dylan, Radiohead, Clash, Burning Spear, Rage Against the Machine, Leadbelly, Pretenders, English Beat, Johnny Cash, Fela and Femi, Baaba Mal, Hassan Hakmoun, Yardbirds, Tool, REM, Stones, Van Morrison, Jim Morrison/Doors, Mozart, Coltrane, the Dead, X, Miles Davis, Pixies, Foo Fighters, Woody and Arlo Guthrie, Cream, Talking Heads, Santana, Joy Division, Joplin, Dead Kennedys, Bowie, Bono/U2, Victor Jara, Tupac, Queen, Beastie Boys, Bob Marley
  • Movies

Apocalypse Now, Bladerunner, The Mission, Lord of the Rings, The Matrix (..1 only), any Marx Bros., Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Dogma, the Godfather, Young Frankenstein, Usual Suspects, Life is Beautifull, any Kurosawa, Breathless, Aguirre Wrath of God, Chinatown, Easy Rider, Star Wars, Citizen Kane, Motorcycle Diaries
  • Television

Yeah, I shamelessly watch it. Sopranos, Carnivale, Deadwood, Daily Show, BBC World News, Alias, 24, Westwing
  • Books

Omnivorous: Anthro, religion, science, history, ephemera, theory, poetry, novels. I'll mention a few fiction authors: Rushdie, Eco, Conrad, Joyce, Tolkein, Delany, Dick, Dickens, Dostoyevsky, Garcia Marquez, Gibson
  • Heroes

The nameless, unheralded, usually poor, usually marginalized, who struggle to make the world a slightly less nasty place to live in. Also Bob Marley, Che Guevara (never owned a poster or tshirt with his image), Bartolome de las Casas, Augusto Sandino.

Blurbs

About me:

I'm some kind of college professor type. I ask too many questions. I don't judge people based on their portfolio, car, tastes, age, degrees earned, sexuality, politics, etc., but on content of character. I do my best not to exploit people or resources. I'm writing what I call an obligatory unfinished academic novel. I'm a Cultural Anthropologist, and I do have some interest in the crazy notion of the internet as an imagined community. Ah, the internet: boundless opportunity for true democracy, boundless spam. My fieldwork and thesis were on progressive Catholics practicing Liberation Theology in Nicaragua. I am currently working on Globalization and Religion from the perspectives of Chiapas, Mexico and Managua, Nicaragua.

Who I'd like to meet:

Those with a passion for social justice, or simply those with passion; iconoclasts, poet-mutineers, those who sit in the back of the class never raising their hand, yet who are full of provocative questions. Most impressive people I have met: Nobel Peace Prize winners Archbishop Desmond Tutu of South Africa, Rigoberta Menchu of Guatamala. NOTE TO PEOPLE WHO WANT TO ADD ME: Please send me a message. I am not here just to accumulate random "friends." NOTE TO BANDS WHO WANT TO ADD ME: No thanks.

On that Blood Lust game, another friend of mine who plays and is more advanced told me that while we're on that stage, we should collect as many Pearls of the Sky as possible as it will be the best money we'll be seeing in awhile.

You should give extra credit to your MySpace students for joining your crew. Even if they remove the app. or if they are deleted from your friends list, they will still be in your crew.

Dude, yer living in Brea now? I'm sure it's old news now but I been kinda AWOL from campus and really need to finish my thesis and talk to my advisors and everything else but I did have a breakthrough recently and my can the idea of a thesis and do a project instead in the form of creating a class curriculum but first I have to get the okay. If approved then be on the lookout for a defense with an interesting title and the use of green army men, a blender and Homer's Illiad. Trust me I can make it work.
See ya later, take care now!

    Hi!

Quick question. In the Anthropology of religion class, you showed us a documentary on pagan women and people who practice wicca. It also went into detail of the witch hunts, etc. I was wondering if you could give me the name of that movie?
    Thanks!

Dr. Canin, you my friend are no skeptic towards the magical side of divination. Divination can indeed be a difficult subject to master, but you are already powerful wizard (aka professor). Just use your inner eye and broaden your horizon.

    Hehehhe... :P

I'm just playing around. I was trying to sound like Prof. Trelawney from HP. I don't think it worked. Have a happy holiday anyway. :)
