THE SHAPE OF AN IDEA: THE WORKING PROCESS OF EC BELL
by Laura Davis
The following essay was composed to express the working process of master painter and sculptor EC Bell. These are the concepts and ideas that he conveyed to me about his creative process during several interviews.
A work always starts as an idea. It could be an emotion, a feeling or a concept to express. It could be a snapshot picture in time. There has to be an inspiration to make a great painting. It begins with something that inspires you. Once the inspiration is found the process of trying to convey the idea begins. Although he has been painting all of his life, EC Bell has been painting mostly figurative nudes over the past ten years. There is nothing more beautiful to me than the female form. It is what inspires me. He once painted from life, but today prefers working from photographs. A model will come into his studio for a photo shoot, and hopefully will produce at least one or two workable photos. A photo shoot will not always produce anything workable. There must be something behind the photograph. This something is where inspiration comes from. EC’s best work comes from models that he has some kind of attachment to. There must be some kind of intimacy, a relationship established. There are some key models that allow EC to produce large bodies of work. Some of the most physically beautiful models can have photo shoots that produce nothing, because there is no inspiration. It takes more than physical beauty to inspire, there has to be something special under the surface.
Once EC has found a photograph that he can work with he will sketch it onto canvas. Sometimes he uses pencil for this part of the process. If the painting is to be more realistic and utilize defined brushstrokes the sketch will be done with pencil. Sometimes if EC is painting more loosely, using broader brushstrokes with less detail he will paint the basic sketch in. Either way EC likes to have a stable foundation to work from. The sketch works as a spine for him to work from. This part of the process must be done in complete solitude. There can be no distractions. In EC’s daily rituals, he usually gets up between three and five am. He has a little coffee, a few cigarettes and then does his sketching. It is quiet and he has solitude. After that he usually goes to the park to fly his model airplanes. This is EC’s hobby. Its what he does to clear his head. It’s what he enjoys when he is not painting. Once he gets back to the studio, a day of painting begins. EC can perform this part of the process in just about any environment. He painted while there was a party going on in the studio. He paints every day, throughout the day.
EC often works on several paintings at a time. Once the painting is sketched in EC can produce three in a day. He is often works on up to six paintings at a time. A painting that provides no inspiration for EC can often take weeks. EC does commission portraits that he often has no connection to. It can be difficult to work on a piece that provides no inspiration. EC often finds himself in ruts and grooves. When in a rut, the only thing to do is. Find some inspiration and paint your way out. When you’re in a groove “Produce, produce, produce.”
