economics is a music project founded by Dean Summach. Rather than
focusing on his studies at the University of Saskatchewan, Dean
decided to buy a 4-track and a cheap microphone. He spent his evenings
recording in his bedroom, capturing whatever popped into his head and
out of his guitar and any other instruments that he could find in his
parents' basement. Dean started burning these songs onto CDs for
friends, sharing his lo-fi instrumental tracks online, and lending
songs to be used in various student film projects. Some of his songs
appeared on CBC's now defunct program Zed, which delighted Dean and
encouraged him to continue his project.
Dean has put the 4-track aside, moved out of his parent's house, and
gradually increased his inventory of instruments and equipment, which
has also expanded the sound and scope of economics. The music's
present form is a dense package of delicate swirling sounds,
maintaining the clever humbleness of those early recordings. This work
has been compared to other instrumental artists like DJ Shadow, Four
Tet, and Mogwai, as well as pop bands like the Smiths, Blur, and
Stereolab. Dean has written songs for a few more films, including
'Eugene', which has popped up in a number of North-American film
festivals, and 'Flatline' a locally-made, full-length feature that
opened in June of 2008.
Dean has been carving out the first official economics album, a
self-titled collection of 12 songs that have gained the courage to see
their official release in August 2008. The album's four parts recall
impressions of untold histories: a naive childhood perspective that
becomes extinct with age; the pensive elegance of an isolated small
town; the daily routine of a boy lost in his own head; and a place
where mammoths still roam the landscape. Dean hopes that whoever is
listening will create their own histories as the songs of economics
wrap around them.
Dean plans on playing his songs live with his wife, Sheena, at small
venues in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and - depending on how things go -
beyond. economics will continue as Dean tries to record whatever
sounds whirl around in his head, even if no one is listening.
