Gumption 011: Ed Davenport - Tillmans Uninfluence / Apples / Quest for Kicks (Digital Only). Release date 10/03/08
Good things come to those who wait and after nearly two years we’ve been rewarded for our patience with 3 outstanding new tracks full of heart, energy and insight from Ed Davenport. Ed has been an integral part of the Gumption set up from the beginning so it seems only natural to begin our second chapter with him at the controls. Anyone who’s familiar wth Ed’s previous releases on Gumption, Liebe Detail or Leftroom (as Szenario) will already be aware of his unique storytelling abilities but Tillmans Uninfluence, Apples and Quest for Kicks (digital only) herald a new era in his musical evolution.
Tillmans Uninfluence is probably the most immediate of the tracks on offer here, effortlessly combining a driving tech house groove with traditional cuban/latin flavours. The intricate percussion parts, warm subsonic bassline and hypnotic chanting pull the dancer irresistabley towards the breakdown which is a real celebration in itself, adding nothing but positive vibes to the proceedings. A true dancefoor burner in the making. Ed utilises a different approach on Apples but to similar effect. Trainspotters may recognise the source of this sprawling epic but nothing can prepare you for the tripped out pyrotechnics that follow as he once again strikes the perfect balance between style and content, originality and creativity. Complete with deranged cowbell loops, dubstep influenced bassline and cavernous breakdown it’s time to break out the smoke machine and surrender yourself to this whirling epiphany of sound.
The digital only track Quest for Kicks is another highly distinctive track that stretches a spoken word tretise on wo/man’s eternal quest to rediscover our natural state of ’ecstatic wonder’ over a superbly crafted rolling groove. Ed’s subtle keyboard fills and bass drops give this mixing tool a really classic feel while providing a little food for thought on the dancefloor. Every one’s a winner baby!
DJ feedback so far:
karotte: “endlich ne neue gumption. tolle platte. spiel ich rauf und runter. ganz große a seite für den späteren morgen. leute und ich gehen steil.”
Alejandro Vivanco (Cadenza/Chile): “Really like the track apples....so housey and hypnotic ..will be in my playlist this month for sure ;)”
ALLAND BYALLO (Nightlight/SanFran): “Holy crap that’s a beautiful release!!!!”
C Rock (Stir 15): “A-side for me, trippy and mindblowing!”
Dario Zenker (Harry Klein/Munich): “I really love the new ep on gumption.... play and chart it.”
Dave Congreve (Repeat Repeat/Soma): “EP is great. First 2 trax are my favourites, been playing both out & going really well... they sound really well achieved & absolutely amazing!!’”
Dj Misk (AltroVerso): “received the promo and i’ve to say thanks for giving me the chance to play ’apples’, a very nice track where the chords lightness is a distinguishing feature. the other one ’tillmans uninfluence’ is a big tune! full support. ”
Eurokai (Liebe*Detail): “Another bomb by Mr Davenport. This one will make the people go nuts on the dancefoor!”
Giles Smith DJ MAG (UK): “Prefer the warmer side "Apples" which has a nice mesmerizing feel.”
Glimpse (Glimpse/London): “Amazing E.P. I really really like all the tracks, but Apples is just in a league of its own! I get sent so much stuff at the moment but this is the best thing I have heard in ages!!! Amazing track. Definitely charted and telling everyone about this one! ”
IDJ Mag (UK): “London lad Davenport has impressed with outings on Liebe Detail and Leftroom, but this double header may be both his finest moment yet. ‘Tillmans Uninfluence’ is a vaguely spooked cut, and like Stefan Goldmann’s ‘Lunatic Fringe’, works lop-sided choral samples in and out of a clanging warehouse boom. ‘Apples’ is better still, with its endlessly rushing churn and happy-go-lucky air. ”
Italoboyz (Get Physical, Mothership): “A very sophisticated release as usual for Ed and Gumption, this time with a timeless feeling which is pretty unusual to have nowadays in techno music. Apples is one of those tracks I’ll always have with me and will be one of the key points in a 4/5 hours set. Super record!”
Jamie Jones (Cocoon/Crosstown): “Im into the A side here. Really like the tension that builds. ed is a good procucer. cheers.”
Laurent Garnier (F-Com): “i like the B side Will try it out”
Luciano Esse (Amnesia/Milan): “WOW!! My greatest compliments!! This EP is something amazing!!! 3 superb tracks!! ”
Mark Henning (Trapez, Cynosure: “What an epic crazy tune... Just listening to both of them again now loud and they are so f**ing good!”
Matt Tolfrey (Leftroom): “ ’I really dig the A side, and the B side is definitely one for the afterhours...’”
Patrick Bateman (TicTacToe/Denmark): “ ’’The Apples track is really, really cool. Will for sure play that one, and chart in March :)’’”
Sebo K (Mobilee): “"apples" is nice. thank you.”
Tiefschwarz (Souvenir): “ need to have this one for immediate dj use!! ”
