I love reading. go ahead and ask me what I'm reading.
04-02-07 reading a book about chaos theory. (fun!)
04-25-07 reading ring of fire: the johnny cash reader, also the tao of pooh (?)
06-30-07 finished reading the biblical truth about the death penalty. good book, especially considering all the fundamentalism that goes on with religions nowadays, I could go on about this one. it's pretty interesting.
07-07 lunch time reading material: A year in Pyongyang by andrew holloway
07-24-07Nightmares and Dreamscapes by stephen king
07-08-07 The Dragons of Eden by Carl Sagan, about the evolution of human intellegence, it's interesting how far we've come in such a small amount of time. (in the grand scheme of things)
07-18-07 And then there was none, by agatha christie! i rummaged through my mess and found this. old required high school reading, crap. the good old days. Also looking through Stephen Hawking's universe, I'm not sure if it's more biography or his studies, it's interesting nonetheless.(spoiler alert: there wasn't a unified theory and it'll be decades before we ever get close to having one!)
07-28-07 ten thousand sorrows by elizabeth kim. a story of a post korean war orphan. "..life was made up of ten thousand joys and ten thousand sorrows, and all of them were stepping stones to ultimate peace." this one's a tear jerker, kids.
09-01-07 The te of piglet. and no, i'm not a huge fan of everything pooh.
10-20-07 Letters from Burma by Aung San Suu Kyi, if you'd like to read a good book about the the country formerly known as burma please check out "finding George Orwell in Burma" it's pretty interesting if you've ever read 1984, or well, know about george's work at all. Also, reading naked, a collection of short stories from david sedaris, interesting work.
11-12-07The long goodbye, by the guy that wrote the big sleep, the noir novel that was made into the very confusing movie version with humphrey bogart.
03-20-08walk on the wildside by mister Nelson Algren (been looking for this book for 2 years!) depression era style writing, also the author of the man with the golden arm, a written work about hard times and addiction; or more like an affirmation that there's nothing new under the sun. not for everyone, but then again. what in this world really is?
8-24-08The Maltese Falcon, gotta read the classics! next up is a tree grows in brooklyn.
8-27-08Why New Orleans Matters. a book written post-katrina. you know, because New Orleans does matter.
1-13-09Our Stolen Future. a book looking into the spread of synthetic persistant (they break down very slowly and in the meanwhile accumulate in animal or human fat tissues, being passed on through to children during pregnancy and breast feeding) toxic chemicals/hormones like pcb's, ddt, des, dioxin, etc. and it's found effects on not only babies but fully developed adults raised in an environment with these chemicals as babies. I talked with one of the professors here in the bio dept and it was brought up that because of chemicals taking the properties of naturally occuring hormones, like estrogen, women are maturing (puberty) faster (appx 2 yrs) with side effects such as stunting their growth due to the earlier time frames. interesting, especially since something similar has been popping up in the news recently about the same topics. next on the chopping block is silent spring.
4-25-09 Nuclear power is not the answer - about the true cost of nuclear power that isn't addressed by pro nuke folks. It itemizes the costs for insurance, building of plants, true cost of materials, and disposal of waste that the government (at the cost of tax dollars) subsidizes. Not to mention the scenerio of sabotaging the plants. I guess if you can't keep planes from flying into the pentagon as well as some very tall buildings in new york then I'm really not too sure how we would keep the same thing from happening to very large nuclear power plants in close vicinities to residential areas and adjacent cooling lakes. Here in sa nuclear power from the coast provides a continuous amount of power that provides part of the baseline of the power consumption here in town, windpower operates sporatically (when there's wind), and coal or gas powered generators cover the rest and provide the differential amount during peak times. Is nuclear power the viable solution? well, it is a resource, but at what cost. I think CPS is trying to make their way forward with solar plants, there's been some discussion about 1K megawatt solar powered facilities. but it's still pretty far in the future.
eddy (ie) for his next trick, will make 425 dollars appear out of thin air to repair his car and pull 40 dollars from behind your ear to pay off CPS. view more
