With superb harmonies and a more acoustic approach that brings out the power and the subtlety of his songs, old favourites such as 'Faith Healer' and 'Wild English Rose' are reborn while new songs such as 'Picture House' and 'Brother Can you Help Me' achieve the same kind of instant familiarity. Featuring Paul Hodson on piano, mandolin and accordion.

Arguably best known for his stint fronting that unforgettable combo The Bushburys (who produced some of the most consistently satisfying rootsy music of the turn-of-the-90s), Eddy's been busy producing some exceedingly fine music out on his own. Only last year, his first solo album The Singing Tree was released, to deservedly wide acclaim, and now that set is swiftly followed by his second, Stourbridge Town. And what an attractive set it is too, albeit more than a touch laid-back in comparison perhaps - and I think I just about prefer it to The Singing Tree because here Eddy feels as though he's just making music naturally with no need to prove himself as a solo artist. But it also certainly builds on The Singing Tree in terms of gently crafted expertise, and it feels more relaxed and content while retaining memorability throughout, for each one of the individual songs is a gently intimate jewel that transports the sensibility of prime folky Americana to his native West Midlands with a touch of Celtic thrown in (would it be stretching things too much to envisage a new genre, Brumicana?!). Stripped-back yet engaging, Eddy's creations purvey an entirely unassuming kind of grandeur. There's a simple poetic romanticism within Eddy's lyrics, whereby the imagery has a poignancy beyond the immediate impact of the words themselves - that's a difficult concept to explain, so you just have to let Eddy's music in and absorb its delights first-hand. King Of My Own Country is a cross between the country-blues of Chris Smither and the folk-troubadour, Queen Of Stourbridge Town takes a local legend as its starting point (even working in a reference to Katie Fitzgerald's, the music venue that Eddy and his partner Trina run). The closing Tu Es A Des Années Lumière is the odd-one-out, a chanson sung partly in French to a swaying Cuban-type beat which doesn't quite sit easily with the rest of the album. And I do find that the album's very brevity, and its wispy lightness of touch and texture, occasionally combine to form a slight impression of ephemerality. But that shouldn't pose a problem, 'cos once the disc's in the player all you need to do is hit repeat!

STOURBRIDGE TOWN
New Mountain Music NMM 2007/1
Though he weaves a beautiful folk song reminiscent of various great British acts of the 60,s and 70,s,it is elsewhere that eddy Mortons main interests lie. With his innate talent for wordsmithery his lyrics shine and his love for the likes of Spender, Auden and larkin is evident in the gently tragic and beautiful imagery he creates ,woven around the subtle instrumentation. " Heard the Sounds of footsteps was the ghost of Mary's Child/ with two hundred years of memories in the shining of her eyes2 Morton sings in The Queen of stourbridge Town. On this album he finds his poetry in the ordinary, his muse in every day occurrences spinning beautiful tales from people and events that most would not think twice about. as rare as it is to find someone who continues to document everyday life in poetic verse Morton is a talent to be cherished. NEXT BIG THING
West Midlands singer songwriter Morton has been touted as one of the folk/roots scenes best kept secrets for a couple of years now. Last years excellent third solo album, Stourbridge Town had echoes of Roy Harper and Nick Drake, a pronounced Celtic Feel and songs with both a finely judged melodyand lyrical edge. The antithesis to the Blunt/ Melua school of tunesmithery.

Eddy Morton should be no stranger to those of you who appreciate fine writing within the Folk/Country and Celtic tradition, with his solo and band back catalogue containing many high points, Stourbridge Town sees Morton continuing in a similar vein, working in accordance with the old adage that if it aint broke dont fix it. The album is a quietly assuredcollection ,bristling with a selection of appealing compostions. There's the delicate beauty of the country-tinged ' Man Who's Got No Name', the absorbing autobiographical ' Queen of Stourbridge Town', the blues flavoured simplicity of 'King of My Own Country', and the infectious 'Other Side Of Town'. Occasionally he steers a little too close to laid back for his own good, although thats a minor quibble with an album thatcontinues to indicate just why he's built such areputation for quality songwriting.

Americana UK. "For those who know Eddy Morton only as the front man in the various incarnations of the Bushbury Mountain Daredevils, "The Singing Tree" may come as something of a shock. Morton has journeyed from good-time folk/country to reflective singer-songwriter, but on the evidence of this album, it’s where he should have been all along".
World Unlimited "Excellent songwriter and singer..... good songs, good CD".
Net Rhythms "As fine a piece of work as anything he's recorded in the decade or so since the demise of the undervalued Adventure Babies. Evocative of a Celtic hued Martyn Joseph, Ralph McTell and Mike Peters with clear touches of Dylan influence".
Dave Lee Travis "I must confess, I love this song". Ordinary Man, Ordinary Woman.
Bristol Evening Post "Eddy writes intelligent lyrics and has a deep, gravelly voice with a nasal quality that is extremely listenable".
Maverick Magazine " From professional footballer to one of the finest songwriters in the UK. The album is a testament to his writing and singing skills".
Folk Diary "All his songs are extremely well constructed with highly memorable melodies".
Classic Rock Society "Eddy is a singer/songwriter of some quality. The album consists of thoughtfully constructed, semi-acoustic, melodic rock and is very pleasing to the ear & a highly listenable album".
Country Music Round Up "Eddy is a highly talented Dylanish songwriter, a thinking-storyteller and a searcher. Husky-voiced, EM incorporates his natural poetic and musical gifts into his engaging quest. His wistful songs are his gentle sermons and his pulpit is his guitar. Living is not for him something to take lightly".
Folk North West "With "The Singing Tree" Eddy shows off his gentle acoustic style on 10 self-penned songs. If you’re a fan of gentler folk/rock it could be just what you want".
Music Mart July 2006 "Singing Tree" is an admirable effort that possesses many charms. As a showcase for a talented songwriter it certainly scores a big victory".
Birmingham Mail "It’s a terrific album & he’s also worth seeing live".
Eddy Morton is a Stourbridge based singer songwriter . Former frontman
with The Bushburys he now runs Katie Fitzgeralds (with his partner Trina Keane) and New Mountain Music.
Inspired to write by his interest in the early 20th century poetry of Spender ,
Auden , Macneice and Larkin it was only later that he was drawn towards
music by the likes of Donovan, Led Zeppelin and in particular Roy Harper,
Eddy Mortons business is words and the images they create . Often hard to
pigeonhole his songs are like chapters in a whole story yet to unfold .
As a solo performer, Eddy Morton has worked all over the UK, Ireland and the USA supporting many top acts including Ruby Turner, The Saw Doctors, Manfred Mann, Ralph Mctell and Lindisfarne. In 1992 he joined Factory Records band, the Adventure Babies working with Steve Lillywhite of U2 fame.
In 1994 he was a founder member of The New Bushbury Mountain Daredevils and throughout eleven years, 8 albums and many line up and name changes has appeared at every major Folk/Roots Festival in the UK and Europe. These include Cambridge, Cropredy, Skagen, Guildford, Dranouter, The Badentreffen (Nuremburg) and many more.
During this time the band continually toured the UK and Europe with their last two albums "Trying to Catch the Sun" and "Timeless" released throughout Europe. "The Vision" taken from Trying to Catch the Sun appeared on the Warner Brothers compilation "Highlands and Islands 2" alongside artists such as The chieftains, Luka Bloom, and Van Morrison.

Cheesy Gareths last official gig with the Smirkins I hope you can all make it down to the fanastic Wheaton Aston festival, Saturday after the next.
Due to circumstances listed on my recent blog I can be sure that this gig will definatly be my very very last gig with the Smirkins, a band I worked hard to get this, and many other fine gigs, performing live over 100 times together, recorded a few fantastic demos and gaining huge amounts of friends on their myspace place which I set up with Tim Parkes for the band. I really wish the band the very best for the future and am sure that I will occasionally jam with some of the performers of the band on projects outside the band but for me, thats it Im announcing this myself as definatly the last Smirkins gig with Cheesy Gareth on guitar.
If your a musician with a heart for treachery, there is a vacancy for a guitarist or other instrument multi instrumentalist that will need to be filled by July
Meanwhile, back in the Garage......... Im now looking for other musicians locally for a fun folkish frolics around the local folk and pubs and festival circuit, Also Im setting up a singers/ songwriting evening in a nearby local pub, if your Gloucestershire based or further afield but fancy the craick then by all means contact me and Ill book you in for a set, have a jam together or whatever best regards, Cheesy
