Politics, art, greasy breakfasts (see above), music, magazines, books, movies and other delightful things...
Music
Warren Zevon, Paul Westerberg, Lou Reed, Lori Carson, Cracker, Nanci Griffith, Steve Earle, Blowoff, Sugar, Bob Mould, the Replacements, ABC, Patti Smith, the Stars, Sufjan Stevens, Boomtang Boys, Guy Clark, Townes Van Zandt, X, Billy Idol, Cracker, Grant Lee Buffalo, NoMeansNo, Vic Chesnutt, Stars, Tragically Hip, Fred Eaglesmith, Bruce Cockburn, Richard Thompson, Chris Stamey, Big Star, Teenage Fanclub, Charlatans U.K., Possum Dixon, Bert Jansch, the Del McCoury Band, Tony Rice, Allison Brown, Peter Mulvey, Matthew Sweet, the Golden Palominos.
Movies
Two-Lane Blacktop (Monte Hellman), Zoolander, Spirited Away, Route 181, Rana's Wedding, The Grudge, The French Connection, Master & Commander (I am a geek for this Age of Sail stuff), The Outlaw Josey Wales, High Plains Drifter (really, any Eastwood western), Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle, Thelma & Louise, Enemy at the Gates, Kwaidan (Masaki Kobayashi), Election, Ocean's 11, Romeo and Juliet (Zefferelli), Romeo and Juliet (Luhrmann).
Films I hate: Being John Malkovich, Waterworld.
Television
The Sopranos! More historically: Twin Peaks. But my T.V. is not even really mine -- just a loan. A tiny little unit from 1988. So, no DVDs (there's the computer for that), but at least I can watch my many VHS tapes. Recently re-watched the entire Twin Peaks series -- a real treat that the younger folks often haven't even heard of. Also watching some twenty VHS cassettes containing all manner of material that I picked up at the Sally-Ann -- a superb mine from which to appropriate video material.
Books
Thomas Mann: numero uno! Life without Buddenbrooks would be a sorry thing. Nothing comes close. Sorry...
Currently (re)reading Patrick O'Brian's twenty-volume Aubrey-Maturin series of historical novels set in the British Navy during the Napoleonic Wars.
Otherwise I haven't had much time for reading beyond course materials and magazines, including Canadian Dimension (where I'm on the editorial collective), Harper's, New Internationalist, The Baffler, The Atlantic, The New Yorker, etc. Just lately re-read A. Conan Doyle's "The Hound of the Baskervilles."
Heroes
• Paul Westerberg -- for continuing to rock and roll even though he got old without getting truly famous.
• Edward Said -- for explaining how the world works and for deciding to throw the rock at the damn Israelis.
• Hugo Chavez -- someone who actually got off his ass and is doing something about the world's problems.
• Andy Warhol -- for never being boring!
• Elvis Presley -- his music is dull, but the collection of his trashy favourite foods (all now famous, of course) really makes for a knock-down cookbook!

I'm a Taurus, and rather typical of them. Mostly kind, easy-going and understanding, with a very long temper, crossed with occasional evidences of stubbornness and acting-out (in a good way!). I cook pretty well, when I do, and I can type like a demon, including numbers and punctuation characters. I write a column on pop culture for a political mag, and write other articles for publication when I have the time. I like watching movies on VHS; reading and laughing at Thomas Mann stories; feasting upon veal tarts from Motta (near Jean-Talon Market); reading books, watching films and playing wargames set in WWII; screenprinting images of Ziploc containers onto fabric; and stealing movie footage to make my own videos. Swimming and badminton are fun, as are Scrabble, bar trivia and monster trucks. No favourite colour. I'm both enamoured and frightened of Japanese pop culture.
Oh yeah -- important: Free Palestine and sanctions against Israeli apartheid, now! Anti-Zionists are welcome here.
I also have an interest in promoting general indulgence in Montreal's many fine greasy-breakfast establishments.
FAST EDDY'S TOP MONTREAL BREAKFAST SELECTIONS:
• Delicieuses Papusas, Beaubien between St-Laurent and St-Denis -- The name really pegs it, and it is not possible to underestimage their breakfast platters, which feature tortillas, spicy scrambled eggs, fried plantain and refried beans, plus a rich cream sauce. And super-cheap!
• Café l'Apothicaire, Beaubien just east of Christoph-Colomb -- Good place with really good omelettes.
• Touski, Ontario a few blocks west of Metro Frontenac -- Run as an anarchist collective, Touski's omelettes are truly astounding, probably the best I've had in Montreal thus far. The menu also sports some outrageously huge, decadent, over-the-top, towering, artistic platters -- but I won't spoil the surprise by telling you what they are.
• Restaurant Greene, St-Henri -- Very cheap. A bit greasy -- but then again, the best-tasting grease I've found after two years and a bit in this city.
• The Arts Cafe on Fairmount West -- Very fine omelettes and benedictines. And probably the coziest cafe I've come across for just sitting around loafing, reading and drinking lattes. Not hipster at all -- The Lord be praised!!
• Deli Joe, Jean-Talon at St-Dominique -- A bit of a suburban atmosphere for me, but good food, kind service and the Italian connection doesn't hurt the place a bit.
• Oxford Cafe, on Sherbrooke West -- Great place, featuring an "Elvis sandwich" (french toast with bacon, bananas and syrup, with beans and fries on the side). One quickly understands how Elvis might have got so fat and died young!
• Dusty's, on Park -- Fairly cheap, very nice diner atmosphere and a dependable sausage-and-cheese omelette.
• Senzala, on Bernard -- Fabulous omelettes, etc., with a Brazilian twist.
• Cafe Joe, on St-Antoine -- A happy place, with a decent western omellete. One really could sit there and read a book all day...
• Moe's, at de Maisonneuve and Lambert Closse -- Such a conveniently located, downtown diner. Great place; too bad the food isn't a little better. Just saturate the fries and beans (the ubiquity of side orders of beans are a favourite discovery of mine upon moving to Montreal) and you'll be fine...
Submissions to this list are most welcome. My various breakfast colleagues and I support the promotion of breakfast diversity.
Who I'd like to meet: No current criteria. Will get back...
