| Influences | Dave - I learned how to play piano at a young age so I've always had an appreciate for keyboards in metal. I was in the marching band in high school so I also appreciate big/complex arrangements. I was first turned on to Progressive/Power Metal by hearing Evergrey's "The Great Deceiver" and my lust for more of that kinda music took off from there. I appreciate other styles of metal but Progressive/Power or anything with keyboards or symphonic influences gets me going.
Roy - I have been a fan of hard music for over a decade, and I have always been passionate about music, working for years in a music store. I have spent time in bands making music. I have done vocals, been a songwriter, played bass and drums. So I guess this is what I look at the most when I do a review. Some of my favorite bands are: Iced Earth, Project 86, Evergrey, Soilwork, Flaw, and Stratovarius. As far as my writing I do have dyslexia I have had it my whole life, and work hard to control it, so I goof on grammar or spelling, cut me some slack, thanks.
ROCK ON!!!!
Dan - I started liking heavy metal when I saw the Slipknot video "Left Behind" by chance on MTV (believe it or not). From then on I knew I was a metal head. I really didn't like music before hand. After a while, I started to get into symphonic bands like Cradle of Filth and Dimmu Borgir. Then I discovered the Norwegian Black Metal scene of the early 90s and coupled with my Norwegian heritage and my distaste for most of Christianity, things just kind of fell in place (this is not to say I don't have Christian friends).
I'm mostly a Black Metal fan. I love the raw power and aggression. I love the majesty of symphonic Black Metal. The dark, brooding, vengeful aesthetics speak to me in ways I can't always articulate. I also enjoy music with classical elements. There is tons of talent in the music I listen to. Get song is a symphony in it's own right. I also enjoy industrial, synth-pop, industrial rock, chamber music and although I'm not a punk fan, a lot the music I like has punk undertones.
Dusty - I was first introduced to metal from the band TOOL, and from there, it just kind of grew. Now i listen to hardcore, deathmetal, and anything in between the two. some of my favorite bands are the Acacia Strain, Whitechapel, Recon, XLiferuinerX, Winds of plague, and Maylene and the Sons of Disaster.
Josh - For most of my life, I was never really into metal at all. The closest I came to liking metal were bands like Linkin Park and Three Days Grace. However, that all changed when I had a fateful encounter with Guitar Hero. In my quest to become an awesome GH player, I discovered several metal songs that I really liked, including stuff from Megadeth, Pantera, Guns and Roses, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Ozzy Osbourne, and others. Of those, Megadeth in particular really stood out to me. I then proceeded to pick up Rust in Peace, which was awesome, and then Countdown to Extinction, which was almost as awesome. After that, I went from a Rock and Country kind of guy to a Hard Rock and Heavy Metal kind of guy. I then took an interest in metal and its 163 million sub-genres. I'm still mostly a Thrash Metal fan, but I also enjoy most other kinds of metal in general, particularly Power Metal. My musical tastes are far more varied than just metal, but this rant is about my fascination with metal. On another note, I'm probably better than you at Guitar Hero. GH was definitely the main driving factor in my still growing enjoyment of metal. Oh yeah, Dave might have helped, too. |
