Georgia’s Edison Project Blisters Manhattan

This was a blog written about us from our tour NYC...
Augusta, Georgia isn’t exactly known for being a hotbed of rock music. Though it’s only a couple hours from the much-heralded Athens, the city’s only foothold on the rock music scene is that the late James Brown, Christian singer Amy Grant and frat-rocker Josh Kelley all call the city home. Other than those three, there’s not much else that comes to mind. But that, my friend, is about to change. Four Augusta residents that go by the name Edison Project are poised to turn the tide for Augusta and themselves.
The quartet made it’s New York City debut last night at the famed Lion’s Den and certainly turned some heads. With an effortless, Manhattan-like swagger the band carved their way through eight songs of sweaty, jagged, hook-laden pop. With muscular guitar breakdowns, thunderous drums and a wealth of three-part harmonies, Edison Project pulled off a rock show that belied both their youth and their anonymity. Kinetic guitarist Rino Mendoza and drummer Zach Swenson are a manic tandem that seize the stage and take charge. Wild-man vocalist Dave Firmin and super-steady bassist Micah Swenson serve as the band’s calm and anchor.
Though Edison Project formed only two years ago and their oldest member is just 25, the band put away notions that they were raw and unrefined from their very first riff. Perhaps the most startling aspect of Edison Project’s set is that its not often bands from outside Manhattan take over a room and own it. Yet last night at Lion’s Den, Edison Project did just that.
The band was fortunate enough to work with producer Don Dixon (REM, Hootie and the Blowfish, Smithereens, Marshall Crenshaw, Moxy Fruvous) and mixer Greg Calbi (John Lennon, Patti Smith and Joe Cocker) two legendary studio gurus who normally lend their talents to much bigger projects. The band’s new disc, Do You Remember Rock n’ Roll?, released this past Tuesday, has all the hallmarks of a major-label rock release and is certain to make an impact on all those that hear it.
Dixon’s slick production is a perfect compliment to Edison Project’s winning harmonies and fiery propulsion of sound. On Do You Remember Rock N’ Roll the band calls to mind stalwarts like The White Stripes, Weezer, Wilco and Matthew Sweet. Sonically, the music of Edison Project is laden with sweeping sing-along choruses, garage-rock romp, precise vocals, a bursting rhythm section and fiery lead guitar. It is without a doubt that the music of Edison Project will fill up stadiums and take over airwaves in the very near future.

Defined by a unique style of music and reaching a wide audience, edison project is a pop heavy, groove rock band from Augusta, GA that has made their mark on the southeast music scene. In 2005 & 2006 edison project was voted Best Rock Band in Augusta by the readers of The Augusta Magazine and earned the opening slot at the hugely successful Drive For Show, Rock Fore! Dough concert Masters Week, where the band began the show featuring Collective Soul and Hootie & the Blowfish. The band sites its influences from a wide range of artists, including Wilco, Ryan Adams, Coldplay, Third Eye Blind, Weezer, Jimmy Eat World, and a multitude of jazz artists. The huge talent in edison shines forth in their progressive anthems and melodic ballads. Most react in amazement when hearing Edison project for the first time, wondering how these young music lovers can have such a cultivated and coaxing sound, manipulating their instruments and vocals at will and having an almost spiritual effect on the most critical of listeners. Micah Swenson is bass guitar and backup vocals. Zach Swenson is percussion and background vocals. Rino Mendoza is lead guitar and backup vocals. David Firmin is lead vocals and rhythm guitar.
