Music by Tony Bray and his band
with my drumming recorded over it.
Hi everyone! I'm a 54 yr.old drummer/songwriter from the San Fernando Valley CA. I specialize in Traditional/Smooth Jazz, Funk, Progressive Rock, Pop, and World Beat. My influences range from Jazz and Classical to Middle Eastern Raga's to Bubblegum pop to Techno.
I started playing drums at around 11-12 years old jamming on my dads drumset with tapes of Motown greats,. Some of my favorites were Martha and the Vandelas, Guess Who, Ray Charles, Rightous Brothers etc..
My Dad was a country drummer who also had a great appreciation of soul music who played locally at bars and Moose lodges in the area (not to mention a USO Tour), and would sneek me in and let me play with his band at the age 14-15. at the same time in jr.highschool I was in orchestra playing 2nd trombone (too many snare players) and was backup drummer for the swing band.
I've performed for many years all over southern California playing in many different types of local bands such as "Crossfire","The Fents","The Works" and recently with guitarist "Todd Trager".
I've appeared on such radio stations such as KWEST, KROQ, KTIDE. My current CD is on UK, Australian, German not to mention American Radio/internet radio.
I'm also the step-son of Blues legend the late Bob Hite, lead singer of "Canned Heat". Many years back I played in the outback of Australia At the MullWalla Festival( during a Canned Heat & Steven Stills Monassas tour. I got to jam w/ a local aussie band and others in front of thousands, it was an amazing experience for a 16yr old).
I've been lucky enough to have played/toured/recorded with some really great musicians, such as Goodie Williams (an avante-garde jazz guitarist/koto player who worked with members of "Hiroshima" and many others), also "Adam Holzman "(an amazing keyboardist and band leader for the Miles Davis band.) "I played with Adam in a groundbreaking local SoCal jazzrock band called "The Fents" in the late 70s,early 80s".I also have played not to long ago in Las Vegas (with "Big Al" Gruskoff) on the STRIP! in front of NewYork NewYork as part of the E'TAM event.
Mike Willis my current guitarist has/is played with"Neil Merryweather's""The EYES" and "the Space Rangers" and is listed in the Who's Who of Rock & Roll. You can hear Willis's lead guitar playing on the song" P.O.P.", Willis and I also play on occasion locally in SoCal in a group called Contraband doing some excellent versions of Cream Songs .
My current CD "Of the Heart" is my first attempt at doing it all. A true indie project. The art/music and recording were done by me (and Mike Willis on Time waits for No Man) using a Fostex VF80 digital recorder and a PC. Songs such as Station X were performed by myself on a Yamaha DTXpress electric drum kit and a Roland GR30 guitar synth; no other instruments were used, this has never been done before!
