About me:

A RIGHT TO EDUCATION
Our story began in 2005 in response to an issue that has affected thousands of Mongolian children and their families. Due to economic decline in the country, a lack of funding in the education system forced many families to either purchase textbooks required for their children's education or have them drop out of school. Other schools still functioned, but with no books for the students or teachers, drastically lowering the quality of education as well as greatly reducing young Mongolians knowledge of the rest of the world.
As the situation unfolded across the country we began working with rural Mongolian communities and local textbook printers to identify the best ways to take on this issue. In the first year of operation, our programs helped over 500 children return to school and partnered with local schools to raise their ability to provide quality education in their communities.
At the same time, grassroots awareness and fundraising efforts were taking big strides forward in the United States, Canada, and Europe. High-school and university students became increasingly aware of the situation in Mongolia and have been incredibly valuable to our efforts and growth. A number of businesses and corporate sponsors also came on board to encourage the effectiveness of our programs.
In 2007, our programs evolved as we found many rural area schools still allowing children to come to school even with their huge lack of government funding. These schools have nothing, no teachers manuals, no study books, and no homework lesson books. Many of these communities depend on books for their children's development because they are too far out to even receive radio or television programs. We targeted five rural schools in the Gobi Altai area, stocking their libraries and providing teachers with needed materials for their classrooms. Over 3,400 children now have access to school and literature books as well as higher quality education, and a future for their lives.
As we move into 2008 and beyond we will continue to adapt our programs to help make a difference where education is most at risk. We began with a simple vision; children in school. However, the reasons why a child finds him/herself in or out of school go much deeper than simply having schoolbooks or not. Every family and community is different and there is no formula that will work to solve a problem here as well as there. Long-lasting, sustainable change takes time, patience, research, and trust. It takes working alongside people who have professional skills but also with people who know their communities. We believe that the local people know best and in partnership with them, we work to solve the issues they are faced with today.
THE CHALLENGE
Edurelief depends on people like you deciding to make a difference in the lives of these children. With $20, Edurelief can supply a child in need with a full year of education. With a few minutes of your time you can change lives forever by sharing the story of these children to your friends, family and workplaces.
From 2006-08 nearly 4,000 children were reached because Edurelief programs were promoted and funded by people just like you. In 2008 and the years to come, we plan to sponsor the education of thousands of children across Mongolia. You can help make that happen. Get involved today!
