Edvard Munch, norsk konstnär, föddes 8 dec 1863 i Østre i Ådalsbruk nära Løten, Hedmark fylke. Han dog 23 januari 1944 på godset Ekely nära Oslo. Han var brorson till Peter Andreas Munch.
Edvard Munch kom att utgöra en viktig inspirationskälla för den tyska expressionismen. Inspiration till målningen Den sjuka flickan fann han i sin storasyster Sophie Johannes död i tuberkulos endast 15 år gammal. I detta verk ger han prov på den neurotiska expressionism som han använde för att förstärka bilden av verkligheten. Av den målningen finns det åtminstone sex varianter.
Edvards mamma, Laura var bara 30 år gammal när hon dog mellandagarna 1868.
I sina mogna målningar och sin grafik är det snarare sina inre känslor inför den yttre verkligheten som han söker uttrycka än verkligheten själv. I sitt mest karakteristiska och berömda verk, Skriet, bygger Munch upp rytmer av färg och virvlande linjer, som även van Gogh gjorde, till en ton av hysterisk intensitet.
Edvards pappa ordnade så att han kunde börja studera på Christiania Tekniske Skole 1879, men bara efter ett år, slutade han skolan, och den 8 november 1880 skrev 16-åringen i sin dagbok: "Min bestemmelse er nu nemlig at blive maler". Det blev han, Norges största.
En av de största samlingarna av Munchs verk utanför Norge finns på Thielska galleriet i Stockholm.
In a note in his diary, Munch described his inspiration for the image. “I was walking along a path with two friends — the sun was setting — suddenly the sky turned blood red. I paused, feeling exhausted, and leaned on the fence — there was blood and tongues of fire above the blue-black fjord and the city — my friends walked on, and I stood there trembling with anxiety. I sensed an infinite scream passing through nature.” –Edward Munch
Some art historians believe that the red sky in the background of The Scream reflects the unusually intense sunsets seen throughout the world following the 1883 eruption of the Indonesian volcano Krakatoa.

The Scream (1893; similar paintings include "Despair" and "Anxiety"), Munch's best-known painting, is one of the pieces in a series titled The Frieze of Life, in which Munch explored the themes of life, love, fear, death, and melancholy. As with many of his works, he painted several versions of it.
The Frieze of Life themes recur throughout Munch's work, in paintings such as The Sick Child (1886, portrait of his deceased sister Sophie), Love and Pain (1893-94) though more commonly known as "Vampire." Art critic Stanislaw Przybyszewski mistakenly interpreted the image as being vampiric in theme and content, and the description has since stuck, Ashes (1894), and The Bridge. The latter shows limp figures with featureless or hidden faces, over which loom the threatening shapes of heavy trees and brooding houses. Munch portrayed women either as frail, innocent sufferers (See "Puberty" and "Love and Pain") or as the cause of great longing, jealousy and despair (See "Separation", "Jealousy" and "Ashes"). Some say these paintings reflect the artist's sexual anxieties, though it could also be argued that they are a better representation of his turbulent relationship with love itself.
