THE LATE ’70s. Eddie Ball and his school chums record a dozen or so DIY punk pop classic 7” singles. His compositions We Love Malcolm [McLaren] (1978), Cloud Over Liverpool (1979) and I Helped Patrick McGoohan (1980) are amongst the highlights of his band’s O Level and Teenage Filmstars output. (www.myspace.com/olevel).
THE EARY ‘80s. Ed Ball Co-launches Whaam! Records with the Times debut single Red With Purple Flashes and album Pop Goes Art! to counteract the “Crucial” adult-orientated boredom that was emanating out of Rough Trade. Whaam! is a brash, bright, beautiful missile and explosion, igniting the hearts of like-minded souls around the world. (www.myspace.com/thetimeslondon).
THE MID ‘80s. Eduardo’s Times make a series of albums starting with This Is London in a lean no-fucking-about style reinforcing the opinion that songs about despair and anger needn‘t be a series of vague non sequitur lyrics over a drone backing track in the key of E. (www.myspace.com/thetimesupagainstit).
LATE ‘80S / EARLY ‘90s. With the invaluable patronage of Alan McGee’s Creation Records Teddy Ball perceives and interprets the Revolution In The Air caused by Acid E culture and records a series of albums destined to flummox, influence, confound, delight, infuriate weekly pen-pushers and fellow artists alike. Times albums galore (E For Edward, Pure etc) are released in parallel with Love Corporation singles in excelsis (Palatial, Give Me Some Love). These records only seem saner when considered in context with Ball’s Teenage Filmstars monsterpieces Star and Rocket Charms. (www.myspace.com/creationtimes www.myspace.com/teenagefilmstars www.myspace.com/lovecorporation).
THE MID 90s. After a short stint in a chart-topping combo Edward Ball is ready to show his pals how he thinks it ought to be done. National radio stations see fit to allow Ball’s pain-scarred chronicles of love and loss full access to the airwaves. Upon it’s release 20,000 purchasers and True Sensitives attend to the eternal vigil that is Catholic Guilt . . . Amen.
