Edward Goater, tenor, was born in 1980 in Solihull. After gaining a BSc in Ecology he studied singing with Lynton Atkinson and David Maxwell Anderson, and in 2002 was a prizewinner in the Hampshire Singer Of The Year Competition. He is now currently a member of the BBC Singers.
Edward’s solo career sees him perform all over the UK and Europe. Most notably he performed in The Barbican Centre the Middle Son for Judith Weirs’ The Vanishing Bridegroom, and a sell-out recital in Hungerford Town Hall. He has worked with many leading conductors and directors including Sir Roger Norrington, Pierre Boulez, David Sulkin and Gianandrea Noseda. Edward can be heard regularly as a soloist on BBC Radio 3 broadcasts and concerts. His oratorio repertoire is extremely extensive; such highlights include Evangelist (Schütz, Stainer, Bach), Mozart's Requiem, Britten’s St. Nicolas (including an invitation to Kenya), Leighton's Crucifixus Pro Nobis, Janácek's Otce nash, plus many more.
His opera invitations include Wagner’s Götterddmmerung; Rachmaninoff's Francesca da Rimini; Antonio, The Duenna-Linley; Viscount de Letorières, La Traviata; Beppe, I Pagliacci; Básník, The Excursions of Mr Broucek-Janácek; Balder, The Death of Balder-Hughes; Spoletta, Tosca. Edward revived the role of Tallon in Dame Ethel Smyth's The Wreckers for Duchy Opera, and will be creating a new role in a new commissioned opera at the end of 2008. In 2004 David Briggs wrote the song-cycle Dreamworld especially for Edward, which is released by Chestnut Records. He has also recorded for Herald, NMC and The Excursions of Mr Broucek has just been released on Deutsche Grammophon.
Future work includes a Schoenberg performance in Belgium, Mozart Mass in C at the Royal Festival Hall in 2009 as well various appearances on Radio 3. Watch the 'upcoming shows' board or email Edward (see opposite) on other appearances!
