About me:
EDWIN SUAREZ, Dancer, was born and raised in Santafé de Bogotá, Colombia. In 1991 Edwin and his family moved to Chicago. He began his formal dance training in 1995 with Dame Libby Komaiko and in 1997, while attending Northeastern Illinois University; Edwin was awarded a scholarship from the E.E.S.D.T. and Dance department. Since then he has studied Spanish dance with Irma Suarez Ruiz, Jorge Perez, Juan Ramon, Juanjo Linares, Vida Peral, Edo, Victorio Khorjan (New york City), Maria Elena “La Cordobesa”, Gloria de Jerez, Juan Mata and Ana Gonzalez (Founders of the Ballet Nacional de España), Manolete (Chicago/Granada), Belen Maya (Jerez), Marcos Flores (Jerez), Juan Parra (Jerez).
Edwin joined Tierra Colombiana Folkloric Dance Company of Chicago as a dancer in 1994. After twelve years in this company he was promoted to Artistic director of Tierra Colombiana (2006-present). In 2004 Edwin was Invited to perform and tour Belgium and France with The Ballet Folklorico Colombiano de Ligia de Granados. After returning Edwin left E.E.S.D.T to become part of El Payo Nuevo Flamenco Music Ensemble where he was the lead male dancer and apprentice of Raul Fernandez lead percussionist of El Payo. Edwin then began to learn more about percussion including African, Afro-Colombian, Caribbean and Flamenco rhythms from different musicians including David Montes, Yacu and Pansekito. In 2006 Edwin became one of the founder members of Soleo Flamenco Dance company of Chicago where he directed, performed and Produced “Eros” at The Arcade Theater, St. Charles IL. He also directed and performed “Noche de Sabor” first Tierra Colombiana live music concert, (2005) and “Viaje por Colombia” Tierra Colombiana 15th anniversary production (2007) with the special participation of music Ensembles Afri-Caribe, Araguaney, Rebolu and Cuerdas Colombianas. Edwin then joined Hispanic Flamenco Ballet on a USA national tour dancing and playing percussion (alegre) in fall 2007 and spring 2008. Currently Edwin is playing and dancing with different groups and artists such as Guitarra Azul, Ojos Brujos, David Chiriboga, David Gonzales and Nico among others.
