As far as the musical influences in my life, imagine being a Latino raised in Brooklyn,New York,"we're talking about alot fo influences"!So ,to name a few, my initial influences were the people who brought me into this world & that would be of course my Mother & Father the Late Great Roberto Vazquez Sr. who is my hero in every imaginable way. I'll never forget that my Father sacrificed his own dreams for the welfare of our family. The wonderful trio music & the many albums that he was involved in one form or other were an inspiration in my life. I remember as a child sitting in on the rehearsals admiring the magic that came out of his hands as he played the guitar. I learned the meaning of what artistic passion meant. I learned that in order to attain skill one must execute with complete commitment & consider always the artistic responsibilty that lies ahead. My Mother Cecilia Vazquez who is by far one of the best writer's and passionate singer's i've ever known is also an inspiration to me and i'm not saying that just because she's my Mother, i say it with good cause and reason. My Mother has this uncanny ability to write a song in seconds. Her ability to deliver a song in lyrical & musical form is both heartfelt and powerful and to me defines artistry. I'm blessed to have such an incredible mentor. I review all my songs with her. .because I love her songs. I hope to write like her someday.
My MOTIVATION,My Drive was my Brother Roberto Vazquez Jr. who literally took me by the hand with him wherever he would go.My Brother is a singer with dynamite vocals. His high regard for technique is something that i have always respected about him. I remember his gigs in Red Hook where he would dominate the whole scene. People screaming out while he performed & girls raving about his voice trying to get his autograph. When i was just a child he was the one (Tito as i call him)who pushed my vocals to their extreme and triggered in me the passion, love & beauty that lies behind technically executing a song.
As far as the SINGERS & Vocalists that influenced me i'd have to say that basically alot of them came to my attention through my older Brother. Singers like Nino Bravo, Raphael, Jose Jose, Juan Bao, Camillo Sexto,Tom Jones,Elvis Presley, while others i discovered either through other people or by chance like Frank Sinatra,Tony Bennet,George Michael,Luis Miguel.
As far as writing i was moved by both spanish & English composers.
Singers like Neil Diamond,Elton John,Tom Jones,Camillo Sexto,Sandro,George Michael,Fiona Apple,Buena Vista Social Club,Hector Lavoe,U2, Harry Connick JR.,Kat Stevens,The Doors, even now i'm influenced by talented artist's like Karma,Alejandro Sanz,.etc,.
but i also find that people who have influenced my life have influenced my writing through their beauty, through their commitment to the human heart, like My Lord & Savior +Jeshua,Martin Luther King, Ghandi,Edward R. Murrow,Og Mandino with his wonderful book The Greatest Salesman,Archbishop Goodier,The Crown Of Sorrows,. Father Kennedy the pastor of my parish Holy Family that i have attended since childhood, the list goes on. I've been a student of life, I've learned from so many.
Life has been my muse.
