Eel Pie Book - Michele's Blurbs |
About me:
Eel Pie Island features in many memories of mispent youth. A hotbed for the nascent talents of the British RnB scene in the early '60's, and prior to that, a venue alive to the swinging sounds of Trad Jazz and Skiffle, the Eel Pie Hotel famously witnessed devilish debauchery (by the standards of the day)and achieved a widespread notoriety.
The mention of the words 'Eel Pie Island' provoke a rush of affection and anecdote for many.
I spent alot time on Eel Pie (and had a ball!), but not until the late '80's, when I had a workshop in one of the boatyards variously pursuing careers in photography and then leather work. I got really interested in the history - it seemed that wherever I went I met people that knew the Island/ had been there/saw the Stones there/ met their wife there... you get the picture...
I met Arthur Chisnall (who ran the club) back in 1996 and knew him up until he died. Through talking to him and many others I began to piece together the story of the famous venue.
This venture is almost complete, but I am always interested to hear more of your tales if anyone wants get in touch. I also have a blog at www.eelpiebook.typepad.com
Anyone Twickenham based can find me at Par-ici in Church Street.
I am collaborating with another author, Dan, an Eel Pie resident, who has been piecing together the non-musical history of this infamous isle...we're sure it'll make a good read.
