About me:
Thanks to Eddie's friends that visit this site. Thanks for remembering my dear son! His Mom, Teena
EDDIE BARNETT, JR
FOUNDATION INC.
A NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATION
the Eddie Barnett, Jr. Story
Eddie Barnett, Jr. was diagnosed early in his teen years with Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM). HCM is a form of degenerative heart disease (or enlarged heart).
Despite this, his passion and love of life prevailed. He not only made a mark on the basketball court but also in the hearts of the people he touched on a daily basis. Eddie
passed away at the age of 16 in February of 2005, leaving parents, family, and an entire community grieving.
Eddie’s Passion was Basketball and the number 10. Eddie played basketball (among other sports) from the first grade until the day he left this world. He was denied participation for the first time during the last months of his 8th grade year and for his entire freshman year
at Jefferson High School because of HCM.
Eventually the diagnosis was changed and
Eddie was finally released to play the last game
of the freshman season.
All of his life he favored the number 10 and had worn
the number up until the last year of participation
at Grant High School, where the number
was retired in honor of former NBA player
Terrell Brandon. Eddie was not pleased but he
would be honored to know that his ..34 at Grant
High School has also been retired alongside of
Brandon’s number 10. He will always be remembered
as our number 10.
The Nickname “Eezy Baby”
Eddie was known for his love for people, a smile
that could make a bad day good, and his jokes
that made you laugh whether you wanted to or
not. His “laid back and live life to the fullest”
attitude and personality are what earned him the nickname “Eezy Baby."
Eddie’s Other Accomplishments
In July 2005 a bill was signed into law in the
state of Oregon making Automatic External
Defibrillators (AEDs) mandatory in every
health and fitness center and school district.
The law is named the Graeme Jones and Eddie
Barnett, Jr. Memorial Act, A scholarship in his
name has also been placed at Self Enhancement,
Inc., a program in which Eddie had been
a part for many years. Because of who and
what Eezy Baby was, his legacy will live on
forever not only in our minds and in our laws,
but mostly in our HEARTS!
Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy
It is estimated that 300,000 people in the United
States have this disease. Often it is undiagnosed.
HCM is the leading cause of sudden
cardiac death in young athletes. The goal of
the Eddie Barnett Jr. Foundation is to raise
awareness of HCM and find a way to provide
screening for all young athletes in Oregon.
Sudden Cardiac Arrest
When Eddie collapsed and died on the basketball
court, he was a victim of sudden cardiac
arrest (SCA). Sudden cardiac arrest strikes over
350,000 people each year. Currently less than
5% of these people survive. Victims of SCA are
in need of shock from a defibrillator within 2 - 3
minutes for the best chance of survival. A
defibrillator can save SCA victims if readily
available. Unfortunately, widespread deployment
of AEDs is lacking. The goal of the Eddie
Barnett Jr. Foundation is to raise awareness of
the need for AEDs within the community. With
funds raised by the foundation, AEDs will be
purchased for placement throughout athletic
and community venues. Please support us in
our efforts to save lives!
Make widespread community AED
deployment a reality with emphasis on
athletic arenas and community venues
Support research of Hypertrophic
Cardiomyopathy
Provide methods for which young
athletes can be screened for HCM prior
to athletic participation
Provide schools with CPR training and
emergency preparedness training
Make a difference! One Heart at a Time
