Photobucket What to expect when fishing for Silver Salmon. Silver Salmon average between (8 to 20 pounds) State Record Silver-Coho Salmon 1976 Andrew Robbins 26 pounds Fly Rod:

Photobucket We do supply all the fishing gear you will need. But we do not supply fly fishing gear.
If you want to bring your own gear, this is what we recommend you bring.

For fly fishing bring at least a 7 weight rod a reel with a solid disc drag system and at least 100 yards of backing.
Spinning gear: You'll want a medium rod and a good reel that has a bomb-proof drag. It should hold at least 150 yards of 15 pound test.
Silvers strike hard and have a first run that can make your reel smoke and often get air born so make sure your reel is up to the task.
Silvers are one of the most aggressive of the Salmon, and some days they will strike just about anything, especially early in the morning. Other times, they will be in a funk and you will need to give them many chances before they bite. Once they do, hang on!

Silvers begin to arrive in late July, and run hard all through August and late into September by the thousands. One of the best things about fishing for silvers is that the peak times to fish them coincides with Bird Hunting season for Ptarmigan. Photobucket so if your wanting to "Cast & Blast" we've got the place for you. Many anglers plan their trips for early August through September, to be able to fish and shoot Ptarmigan.

August silver runs often overlap Chum Salmon runs. Only a few folks have discovered that ocean bright chums are one of the best fighting fish in the world. Most of those were taught while fishing in places where chum and silver salmon mix. It is a great fishing day when you can catch both silvers and chums and both are "chrome bright".

Your arms will be tested! Silver Salmon are top dog when it comes to hitting hard, running fast, and jumping lots! And you'll have one on the hook all day. You can't catch them all but you can try!

This part of the trip is vary special for a lot of people as float plane rides can be very exciting and the view is breathtaking. When you land, your guide and camp staff will be waiting to meet you. After you settle in and become accustomed with your accommodations, if you wish you will be taken directly to the fishing grounds. You can expect three meals a day plus snacks, sodas and juices, based on all you can eat and drink. We are pleased to provide this service for you as it gives you more time in the field. Upon your return back to camp each day it's nice to find a blazing fire, hot coffee, snacks and your friendly camp staff ready to serve your evening meal.

Photobucket Becharof refuge and the surrounding area is some of Alaska's most remote wilderness, completely pristine, and untouched. It is all so home for the largest Brown Bear population in the World! The weather on the Alaska Peninsula is characterized by cool temperatures, high winds, prolonged cloud cover and frequent precipitation. Severe storms can occur year-round, often with intense winds known as "williwaws". Summer temperatures can range from 32° F to 80°F, with an average in the 50’s. Precipitation varies with elevation and location. The Bristol Bay lowlands usually get less than 20 inches per year, while up to 160 inches fall on the Pacific coast. Most of the rain and fog occurs from July through October.

Photobucket The Alaska peninsula and the Becharof National Wildlife Refuges are lands of spectacular beauty, with rolling tundra, braided rivers, glacial lakes, towering mountains, active volcanoes, rugged sea cliffs and pristine coast lines. Dominated by the massive Aleutian mountain range which forms the spine of the Refuge lands. These boundaries extend from the rocky Pacific to the lakes, tundra, and marshes of Bristol Bay coastal plane. Encompassing almost 5 million acres, of some of the wildest pristine land in Alaska! Photobucket

This monument on the Alaska Peninsula supports one of the densest known populations of the great Alaska brown bear in the world. This area encompasses habitat used by a discrete population of bears for denning and foraging, both north and south of Becharof Lake. At the southern end of Becharof Lake, several hundred bears concentrate during salmon spawning season. Some of the bears make their dens in the area on islands a few feet above the water level, a unique phenomenon of great interest in the study of this great carnivore. Deeply worn bear trails also indicate decades of extensive use, making this area important to the study of the bears' long-term habits and population fluctuation. Rich salmon spawning habitats and the presence of such prey species as caribou and moose are key factors in the intensive use of the area by the bears. Image Hosted by ImageShack.us
The biology of the brown bears, their habitat and associated plant and animal species within the monument, together with other ecological features of the area, combine to offer excellent opportunities for viewing these great animals in untouched pristine habitat. Photobucket

Your trip will be more enjoyable if you minimize your impact on the land, wildlife, and other visitors. Make demands on yourself, not on the environment, and leave little or no trace of your visit.

Who I'd like to meet:

Our Lodge "Becharof Rapids Camp" is located 32 miles up from Bristol Bay on the Egegik River which is home to the second largest run of Wild Sockeye Salmon in the world. Photobucket Each summer, this river averages about 10 million Sockeye, along with Kings, Silvers, Chums, and a few Pink Salmon.
Our Lodge sit right below Becharof Lake rapids, on 147 acres of private land. The border of Becharof National Wildlife Refuge runs right through our property .
Photobucket You are surrounded by volcanoes, islands, rivers, lakes and Creeks. This is where the fun begins fishing at the head waters of the Egegik River, for Reds, Silvers, Dolly Varden and Grayling. Most of the fish will be landed from gravel bars, rock outcrops and the eddy's they make around several small islands in the middle of the river.
Here is where Fly Fishing and using small spinners in the shallow Cristal clear water is at its best.
These days on the river with us catching fish watching Eagles fly by and Bears stroll down the beach, while Salmon jump all around you heading up river to spawn, you will remember for a life time. Fishing from rafts and jet sleds gives us the ability to take you into the most remote parts of this land we call Home!

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket ..

Sockeye Salmon and King Salmon fishing starts mid June and ends late in July. Most Kings our found on the King Salmon river which drains the famous Katmai National park. The King Salmon river is approximately 66 miles long and is a great river to float and camp with family and friends. It has several creeks that our used by the Salmon to spawn, these creeks are great fishing hot spots. The King Salmon River and its drainages also support a vary large population of Rainbow Trout, Photobucket Dolly Varden Photobucket and Grayling. Photobucket Spending some time on this river, you will soon understand the meaning (World Class Fishing).

Becharof National Wildlife Refuge provides important habitat for many fish and wildlife species. Some of this population includes brown bear, Photobucket Moose Photobucket Caribou, Photobucket wolf Photobucket Wolverine, Fox Photobucket River Otter, and Beaver; five species of Pacific salmon, Arctic grayling, dolly varden/char, rainbow and lake trout, Northern Pike, and Burbot. Birds commonly seen include Bald Eagles, Owls, Falcons, Ravens, Ducks, Geese, Swans, seabirds, shorebirds, Ptarmigan Photobucket .. Sea lions, harbor seals, sea otters, and migratory whales.

Excerpt from Blog, A Fishermen Pledge
Ive been waiting all winter to wash my hands and face in this river I call home. I know its stupid too some and I have tried too convey to them what it means to me, But most just laugh.
I say to my self as I put my hands in the cold river "Ive come back for you once more, I am yours, and you are mine, I will only take what I need from you and give you all that I can, I Thank you for supporting me and keeping me Safe. I know one day you might take me and keep me, for good thing never last forever. If this summer is my time I have no regrets I am yours"
