About me: Ellen Godena is a choreographer and movement artist working in Boston and New York City. Her work is informed by on-going studies in Japanese butoh and other indigenous dance forms. She considers movement to be a distillation process, an on-going effort to define the essence of non-human and inanimate kinetics. Ellen's numerous solo and group projects have been presented at venues throughout New England and New York City. Deborah Butler, curator of the 2007 Boston Butoh Series said of her recent work, Phloem, “Ellen transformed herself into particles of nature, animal forms and reflections of the human psyche…her presence was startling and very moving and beyond human.”
Recently, Ellen has begun working with robotic devices and entities. She and collaborator Max Lord were awarded Artist Residencies in February 2008 at The League of Electronic Musical Urban Robots in Brooklyn, NY, where they worked with LEMUR’s collection of over 50 musical robots to create an original music-movement composition. Inspired by her experience at LEMUR, Ellen has continued to explore the odd schism between animal and machine movement.
Ellen and Max also co-curate a performance series, ZeroPlan, which explores improvised collaborations between experimental musicians and dancers whose work has been influenced by butoh. They have produced several offbeat productions in Boston and New York City since early 2007. The series was recently highlighted by an article in the Boston Phoenix. www.zeroplan.org
Ellen has received training in Butoh from Deborah Butler, Jennifer Hicks, Su-En, Katsura Kan, Hiroko Tamano, Diego Pinon, Vangeline, and Pamela Wunderlich. She earned a BFA in painting from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1997 and an Ed.M in Developmental Psychology from Harvard University in 2005. see more at www.oceanbody.com

Ellen! You remind me of my last trip in Gaia-land inner space. Gaia hypothesis: the theory, put forward by James Lovelock, that living matter on the earth collectively defines and regulates the material conditions necessary for the continuance of life. The planet, or rather the biosphere, is thus likened to a vast self-regulating organism. Love. Joan
Well, I'm working from home today, trying to find some time to clean the house for a showing tomorrow. I just got back from the dump. We've had to drop our price significantly, but hopefully this will mean it will sell. We don't have extra lots ($10K worth of surveying etc. later) after all.
I just spilled half of my extra large coffee all over the counter. It's now a medium.
Peeked at your brand-spankin'-new website, and it looks great. Photos of you performing are always so invigorating/freaky (I think the freaky part is 'cause I'm family--though our familial relationship is itself freaky and not "real" in and of itself). Anyway, I launched my own Website in 2007 and I loved that experience, so I'm sure you're super excited. Congrats!
