Word Pimpin 2: We Don't Need You
EHUSTL ENTERTAINMENT
From the Bay to LA, Word Pimpin 2: We Don't Need You is a California thing. Lead by rap veteran Keak Da Sneak and held together by Los Angeles' Baby S and The Bay Area's Q-Z, the trio cover all the angles from turf to the club. Whether it's a feel good party starter or a wig splitting thumper, Keak, Baby S, and Q-Z execute with a bold presence and lyrics to match, embodying the Word Pimpin' ethos. Recruiting an All-Star team of Cali rhyme spitters from Snoop Dogg to E-40, Word Pimpin' 2 is undeniable like Donald Goines' game and a trunk rattling with beat.
Following the same formula as the original Word Pimpin, which paired B-Legit alongside Q-Z and Baby S, the addition of Keak Da Sneak is a sensible and welcomed addition. The Oakland native, who was recently heralded as one of the leaders of the Hyphy Movement, has a long track record in rap. As part of the group 3x Krazy, Keak released the West Coast classic Stackin Chips in 1997 on Virgin, and parlayed the success into a long standing solo career. With more than a handful of albums under his belt and countless guest appearances from E-40 to DJ Shadow, Keak has established himself as a go-to guy for hot music. His pairing with Baby S and Q-Z continues in the same tradition.
While Keak holds the veteran status, Baby S is no stranger to rap either. After getting in the game in 1998 on King Tee's "Skweez Ya Ballz," Baby S got his first major break from Kurupt of Tha Dogg Pound, who featured S on his hit single "We Can Freak It." Baby S would go on to ink a deal with Blast Entertainment/Ruthless Records and release his official debut, Street Fractions. While Baby S draws influences from West Coast professors N.W.A. and DJ Quik, Q-Z on the other hand is quick to cite KRS-One, Rakim, and Public Enemy as his inspirations. In fact, it was Chuck D who in 2002 encouraged Q to stick to his sound and not bend to trends. Chuck's words have paid off and in turn, Q has found his niche serving as the balancing factor between Keak and Baby's unorthodox sound.
With Word Pimpin 2: We Don't Need You, Keak, Baby S, and Q-Z blend their styles into a logical formula. Keak's rough voice and stop and go, gas-brake-dip flow compliments the hard hitting straight up the middle approach of Q-Z and the clever word play and raw stylings of Baby S. The album's lead single "Get Your U On" is an upbeat neck snapper and features E-40 on the remix. The video for "Get Your U On" was just shot and will be hitting video outlets shortly. In the second single "Do It Right," which features Snoop Dogg on the remix, each artist puts their stamp over a saucy, ride-out West Coast banger. The singles do what they need to do, but the group’s real prowess lies in cuts like "Monster Words" and "I Choose You." The heavy low end rumble and free spraying lyrical shootout on "Monster Words" demonstrate the strength in the group's diversity of delivery, while "I Choose You" shows their ability to flip a concept in different ways while keeping it cohesive. Other notable cuts include the R&B tinged "Jello and Chopsticks," "Don't Take It Personal," and the polarizing but equally potent "Inner City Street Life."
Boasting 20 tracks, Word Pimpin 2: We Don't Need You is an accurate representation of California's diverse sound and deep pool of talent. The album offers a buffet of beats and rhymes, presenting the rugged raw, smooth, and soulful in equal parts. There is something for everyone and songs for all occasions. Applying the metaphor of hustling words, Word Pimpin is a statement by skilled rhymers to stay down and dedicated to the art of rhyme.
