"...a funereal anthem of treble and reverb which materialises in front of you like a faded postcard from a frozen tundra beyond the fiery sea- it makes us think of Nico.
It sounds like the songs that that child was singing before she disappeared deep into the neck of the woods never to be seen again, they still echo ghostly in a barren spot where all that remains is silence. Enthralling." (www.20jazzfunkgreats.co.uk)
"Ela Orleans is a Polish musician now based in Brooklyn, having arrived there by way of Glasgow. She is a member of heavenly pop collagists Hassle Hound, has played with various luminaries of the New York experimental and noise scenes and is a composer for the theatre. This is her first solo album and it reflects the diversity of her collaborations and the places she has called home. Haunted by all the best musical ghosts, "High Moon Low Sun" paradoxically and simultaneously merges the melancholic and the joyful like the first kiss from a new lover at a rain swept funeral. This complicated loveliness has Polish fuzz blues casually mingle with the jaunty but melancholy deep-sea organ and liquid rhythm of drip-hop, and flirts charmingly with elegant European doo wop. A slow buzz, eerie rattle and violin pluck mournful reveries. Surf guitar for the ripples on the stillest, pellucid sun-dappled ponds. Ela Orleans has a unique voice, gifting us fragile harmonies which are exquisite without being sentimental. She is Moondogmatic in her intransigent commitment to producing compositions of subtlety and incongruent beauty. These are polysemous confections which make you feel that you are listening to pop music for the first time again". (by Barry Burns for "Setola di Maiale").
"Polish artist Ela Orleans views the world of song through a cracked lens, recycling vintage-pop samples into haunting sound assemblages..." (Time Out NY).
" This is a dynamic, versatile, enthused and crazed subliminal music. This is not noise. This is sound which reflects life in all its varied intricacies, its beauty and despair. It’s also music which addresses music and music alone—with only musical concerns: sound, timbre, phase, voice, language. An absolute treat not to be missed, Skitter with Ela Orleans better be heard by those who care. And pay attention. Close attention."

I am Polish. I live in New York. I have been taking part in a few experimental / noise projects in New York City. I played with Marc Orleans (Ozone Swimmers, 3i's, Franklin's Mint), Phil Franklin (Franklin's Mint), Tom Greenwood (Jackie O Motherfucker), Adam Nodelman (Franklin's Mint / RIP), Pete Nolan (3i's), Kevin Shea (duo performances) and Matthew Wascovich (Jackie O Motherfucker, Scarcity of Tanks). I recently joined the band - The Judy Blooms. For the most part though, I am focusing on solitary productions and solo performance. My first solo album "High Moon, Low Sun" was released by Setola di Maiale (Italy) in November 2008. My second solo LP "Lost" (vinyl and CD) was released by Les Bandes de la Station Radar (France) this Summer. A few months earlier the same label released the project Ela Orleans + Liam Stefani (Glasgow, UK).
In January 2009 I was chosen to participate in the NYFA (New York Foundation for the Arts) Mentoring Program for Immigrant Artists. I have been matched on the one to one basis with the composer - Lukas Ligeti. In September, I got accepted for Composing for the Screen 2009, A Film Scoring Mentorship Program; Sponsored by BMI and directed by composer Rick Baitz, this New York City-based program selects seven emerging film composers and provides a series of workshops, followed by year-round continued consultation and development.
The structure of my compositions are methodically improvised circles of layers. The phrases are often imprecise, accidental and determined by what I consider attractive, but not necessarily pleasing. I am using violin, guitar, piano, vocal, line 6, sampler and my record collection. I am inspired by radio waves, ambient noise, overheard conversations, daily routine, literature and the physical action of playing an instrument.
I performed in The Knitting Factory, The East Village Radio, The Stone, Pianos (New York), Eat Records, Free103 point 9, Llamo Estacado, Matchless, Market Hotel, The Dumbo Arts Center (DAC), The Invisible Dog, Gandalf's, Le Grand Dakar (Brooklyn), John Doe Records (Hudson) Wave Farm (Catskill Mountain Park) [NY]. I was featured on EVR (NYC), Dublab (LA) and Radio Junk Drawer (Portland).
I am the third part of the Glasgow based Hassle Hound. The band has releases on Staubgold, Pickled Egg, Twisted Nerve and Textile Records. Tracks from our records were selected by John Peel and presented on Radio BBC 1. With Hassle Hound I played in: UK - 13th Note, Transmission Gallery (Glasgow), Germany - Zentrale Rantlage (Berlin), Feinkost Lampe (Hanover), Westwerk, Astra Stube (Hamburg), Kunstverein (Karlsruhe), Kulturbunker (Cologne) ParisMoskau (Leipzig), MS Stubnitz (Rostock); Netherlands - WORM (Rotterdam), Extrapool (Nijmegen); Poland - Re (Krakow), CDQ (Warsaw), Firlej (Wroclaw), France - Les Instants Chavires (Paris), Centre Culturel du Crous (Reims).
In the past I composed music for a few theater productions. I also collaborated with Marcus Schmickler (A-Music) on his composition "United Untitled" during The Goethe Institute program called "Sounds D" dedicated to emerging Polish composers.
