.. .. .. .. .. ..found this ....stars layout.... at ......HOT..FreeLayouts.com.... :: ..MyHotComments.. Yehonatan Elazar-DeMota was born and raised in Miami, FL. He comes from a Sephardic Jewish family. His family arrived from the Dominican Republic in 1976. His musical interest began when he was about 7 or 8 years old. Yehonatan, or Yoni, as his friends called him, would often grab pots, pans, bottles, or any metal object, and create intricate percussive rhythms. Every year, two of his uncles would come from the Dominican Republic with a guitar and a tambora (Domincan double-sided hand drum). When the entire family gathered for the end of the year holidays, they would create music by playing pots, pans, guitar, tambora, and singing. In his teenage years, he became interested in the music of the Caribbean and Brazil. He began playing the saxophone at the age of 13, and a year later, he learned how to play the bass. He was self taught at first, until he had his first professional lesson at the University of Miami. Throughout high school, he received many awards in music, including an honorable mention for the Miami Herald’s Silver Knight Award (1999), and the FIU All-Star Jazz Band. (1998). Moreover, he would make musical arrangements for a Latin jazz band that he put together, with himself as the conga player and bandleader. In 1999, Yehonatan received an academic scholarship to the University of Miami, where he studied Aerospace engineering for two years. While he was there, he was often attracted to the vigorous music program. During his free time, he would join in at the local jam session. In 2002, he moved to Puerto Rico, where for a year, he distributed and performed the music from a self-produced album called “Ten Piedad de Mi.” A few years later, in 2005, he decided to return to Florida International University to finish his degree in Jazz performance. While there, he was able to “woodshed” and increase his musical knowledge. In December 2007, he released an album called “Nostaljia.” (Judeo-Spanish) He describes this project as sentimental because of the spiritual and historical implications of his Jewish ancestry. Nostaljia describes the yearning of the Jew for his homeland, amidst 2000 years of exile. On this album, Yehonatan explored with Latin, Mediterranean, middle-eastern, and jazz fusions, playing both tenor and soprano saxophones, bass, and guitar and piano on some tracks. This project is definitely an exhilarating experience for the listener. When asked about his career motive, he says, “It is my desire to unite all cultures through my music and be an instrument of peace.” Read more about it at http://www.forward.com/articles/14802/ .. .. .. .. ..
