EB-037 - INDOMITOS - Indomitos
Lp
From the moment they take the stage with a dry 'goodnight, we are Indómitos', to when they amble off the stage having delivered a pitch-perfect set of rattling, rumbling and reverb-drenched garage punk, it's obvious that this band is something special. A three piece, originally hailing from Vigo in Spain, two thirds of Indómitos used to be half of the short-lived, Glasgow-based band Noon. This, unbelievably, is their debut gig together (and drummer/ vocalist Paula's first ever).
With guitar pitched somewhere between Sister-era Sonic Youth and the Birthday Party and bass alternating between a rhythmic drone and thundering, propulsive energy, Indómitos employ the same inventiveness with a tried and tested formula that first made the Pixies so ear-catching. Undoubtedly, the fact that they are singing entirely in Spanish endows Indómitos with a certain quality of detached mystery but the fact that they could be singing about practically anything and still be so thoroughly enjoyable probably speaks for itself.
Word is that Indómitos may be returning to Vigo, so catch them while you can. And if you do see them, try to persuade them to stay.

EB-034 - SONNY BURGESS & THE LEGENDARY PACERS - Live In Spain
Lp
SONGS: Blue Suede Shoes, Treat Her Right, Release Me, Gijon Breakdown, Happy Birthday Baby, Honey Don't, Baby Watcha Want Me To Do In Virginia?, Cold Cold Heart, Mean Woman Blues
You could say when you’re a few years over retirement age you’d wanna be like Sonny Burgess and The Pacers. You’d wish you had the energy, the enthusiasum, the style, the charm, the sense of fun. You probably should be saying that now, even if you’re like 25, because clearly, most of us don’t.
I knew they were coming to Spain to play the Crossroad 2007 Festival. I was excited about them playing in my new neighborhood, Asturias. With all the members averaging over 70 years old, I wondered if they still ‘had it.’ I’d always loved the sound of their records, always tougher, grittier and bluesier than anyone else in the Sun Records stable. They had this intense beat, wild screaming and cornball trumpet that always made me feel like there was a party that I should have been at, a party I had missed.
In September 2007 they took the flights from Little Rock, Arkansas to Atlanta, to Madrid, then up to Asturias on a Thursday. Friday they hauled their merchandise, set up a table, signed autographs, talked and posed for pictures with their Spanish fans. Saturday they stole the show at Crossroad, blasting out the most authentic Rock and Roll heard in 3 days, easily smearing groups a quarter of their age. During the set they blew out the power generator for the whole festival, then came back without missing a beat to finish off the crowd, who waited in the dark for the show to go on. Then more merch, photos, autographs, handshaking until the wee hours of Sunday morning. After a few hours of sleep they made thier way to Circo Perrotti Studios in Gijon to blast out these nine songs.
These guys got right down to work — real pros with thousands of gigs under their belts. They hauled in their own gear, got settled down in the studio and started busting each other’s balls like they were teenagers, as they hammered out songs they hadn’t even played live before. When it was time to break and treat them to a nice Asturian lunch, they asked me if I could set them up with some Diet Cokes and Snickers bars, because they didn’t want to stop playing! When they did stop, it was back to the hotel in Oviedo for five hours sleep and four connecting flights to Arkansas the next morning.
That afternoon I heard the kind of Rock and Roll that after years of working in the studio, many attempted to duplicate. Most failed. There behind the studio glass were the people responsible for inventing it. Jorge and I furiously rolled tape trying to keep the pace with The Pacers. The sound shook the studio and immediately transported me back to the USA. A rock solid backbeat and a Jimmy Reed shuffle that no drummer in this country could master. Roadhouse piano that was up to snuff with The Killer’s wildest pounding. A Hillbilly yodel cured for years in Arkansas corn likker, drenched in tape echo. And a blues holler, well, that made Elvis sound a little more like Pat Boone and a little less than Arthur ‘Big Boy’ Crudup.
This was not the normal noise you hear on a Sunday in our barrio in Gijon. Or London, or New York or even Memphis anymore, for that matter. This was some archaic language that only the elders could speak and the youngsters could only hope to understand. Damas y Caballeros, se llama ‘Rock and Roll.’

EB-018 - THE HELLS - Love Sick Love Picture Lp
I was eager to see this band, 'cause I've only heard some songs on the net that I really liked. And I must admit that I'm a sucker for that cool new york-ish-noiserock-dressed-in black-boy/girl-dry-primitive-heartfelt r'nr. I love the sound of bands like The Kills, White Stripes etc, etc. So of course I had some excpectations. I didn't really catch the support band as I was to busy drinking beer at Trafikcafeen-a great "brunt værtshus" - with my flygirl Astrid. But I've seen TBV a couple of times before and they are a truly great band amongst all "the new breed" of Danish rawk. The Hells then went on stage, with some minor technical problems but after a short while, they were just everything I hoped for! Massive sound, cool attitude, great clothes. Hell, it even sounded better than The Kills! Girl vocal, raw twin guitars and cool stomping drums. This trio plays rock'n'roll in the veins of garage and noisy Velvet Underground. Later on I went to Stengade 30 to catch some Baby Woodrose, but there was so many people and I was too drunk and the sound from The Hells were still roaming my mind, so I just went home, feeling very happy about bands like The Hells exist. The next day The Hells appeared at Crunchy Frog's Star DJ event at Ideal Bar, where they just played one great tune after the other at the turntables. And I got a chance to say hello to them...Yeah! EB-017 - ULTRACUERPOS - The Awesome Amazing Sound Of Ultracuerpos Lp
Imagine Elvis, Fred Sonic Smith, Keith Moon, Phil Lynott and Carl Perkins jamming in hell's kitchen" sez the wild press release from this very interesting Spanish band. Big words, but Ultracuerpos are very hard to describe musically as you probably guessed. Vintage Detroit hardrock meets the 60s r&b sound of Stax Records would be my take on'em, it's incredibly infectious soulful rock'n'roll played with a lotta heart. Alvaro Dorda is probably the best Spanish r'n'r singer I've ever heard, and the rest of the band back him up perfectly with their superior musical abilities. These guys sure aint youngsters and must've been in tons of bands before Ultracuerpos. Some of their songs reminded me of Lincoln Street Exit for some strange reason. . I'd have to say Ultracuerpos) was one of the biggest and most positive surprises I received for this issue, my friends in Dollhouse will freak when they hear Ultracuerpos, haha . A completely flawless rock'n'roll masterpiece, I'M HOOKED - NOW GIMME MORE! (Lowcut Magazine)

EB-014 - LASCIVOS - Casi Muerto Casi Vivo Lp Gatefold
Some bands perform to satisfy an audience while others live, breathe and sweat their work with only one thing in mind: to satisfy themselves. LASCIVOS epitomises the latter. Not only do they play explosive, raw, primitive and swampy rock ..n' roll, they do it with honesty, class and fury. Their music and attitude are like their lifestyle .. something a lot of today's bands can't brag about. The band's devil sisters, Rut (vocals) and Montse (drums), were exposed to the darker sides of rock ..n' roll music and culture since they were children, and soon became what they once only dreamed of imitating. LASCIVOS took form in their heads and they went on to start playing like juvenile delinquents. After a string of wrong line-ups, the band found the perfect gang in Rodrigo (guitar) and Emilio (bass). After showcasing their dangerous live show in Spain 's most reputable music clubs, they developed a considerable cult following, kicking everyone's ass in the process. Now LASCIVOS release Casi Muerto Casi Vivo , their first full-length, after a limited edition debut 7.. single on H-Records. It's not a tribute to true rock ..n' roll .. it's the real deal, and a perfect example of what an authentic rock ..n' roll record should sound like, from its simple production values (recorded and mixed in Bonham Estudios, Spain) to its undeniable raw energy. Rut's lyrics about independence, insecurity, sex, bad feelings and danger could easily come off as a cliché from less committed lips, but anyone can tell she has too much credibility for that to happen.
