Eric Farmer started the group in April, 1993. The original name was "The Inspirational Spiritual Gospel Tru-Tones". The most memorable MEMBERS WERE: Carl Joseph, Howard Salter, Kenny Davis, Desmond Roberson, Lee Baker, TommyLee Turner, Eddie Morris JR, and JohnnyMack Mitchell JR. After about five years, many of the old members departed. Later, the groups name became " Elder Carl Joseph & The Spiritual Gospel Tru-Tones. The band went from 15 to 20 members, to 4 members, who play and sing. Christ has blessed the group to perform on "Bobby Jones Gospel", and several other great opportunities. The group would also like to thank the leader: Elder Carl Joseph.
**FOR THOSE WHO DON'T KNOW CARL JOSEPH**
When America first started hearing about Carl Joseph in 1980, the reaction was disbelief.Born with only one leg, it's pretty hard to believe he played football, basketball, & track. He not only played, but was captain of his football team & made All American. He high jumped 5ft 10in, slam dunked basketballs, and ran over anybody who tried to block him on the football field, all done without his prosthesis. It was so incredible that, Carl was on the t.v show (That's Incredible). Carl Joseph was also on the shows:NBC with Bob Trumpy, To Tell The Truth, Kids are people too, and The Today Show. The National Enquirer was even on to his story. Carl Joseph's life as a teenager was so amazing, Jeff Meyers (A sports columnist) wrote a book on Carl called "One of a Kind-The Legend of Carl Joseph"
After attending Pittsburg, Carl attended Bethune Cookman College and later became a coach for BCC. He always loved music, so after being apart of many choirs, Eric Farmer(Tru-Tone founder) asked his childhood friend Carl to join the group. Joseph is one of the many ministers produced from the group. He was soon ordained as an Elder. Carl Joseph thanks God for his past accomplishehments (including his most cherished being The Philadelphia Sports Writers 1982 Most Courageous Athlete Award) but is very well focused on Christ, who he say "is my life". He said "My mama never felt sorry for me, and I never felt sorry for myself. Believe you can do it and Christ does the rest."
IF U NEVER HEARD OF "PULL OVER"---About 8 years ago, a member of the group (Howard Salter) and then wife (Tammy Salter-mother of Desmond Roberson-group member and manager) wrote one of the groups most popular songs. After Howard departed from The Tru-Tones, he joined The Surpreme Stars of Jacksonville, FL, now known as Nu-Testament. After an argument in the studio about how to record the song, Howard and his wife left without recording. The group recorded the song anyway. After a small bit of success, another group in Gainsville, FL, under the leadership of Min. Troupe recorded the song, and named the album "Pull Over & Let The Lord Drive". The Tru-Tones were the 1st to "own" the song, but the last to record it. The song has been recorded twice by The Tru-Tones. Bro. Howard Salter and the Tru-Tones do random shows together, where Howard and step son Desmond (who is the now owner of the song, and has been for 5 years now) perform the song as a duet. Howard Salter gave the song to his step son, knowing that his son was inspired by him performing with the Tru-Tones in the early days. Many groups sing "Pull Over" and some give credit, some dont. We believe that if CHRIST give you something, no man can take it.
