In the early days of November 2004 on a lonely train trip from Orange County to his home town of Fresno, James Bush decided it was time to rid himself of the melodies in his head and distance himself from the band he no longer wanted any part of. Scared and overwhelmed James set out to finish and record the songs that were hindering him for months. Feeling that something was still missing James called upon a friend, Scott Jackson, to fill the large guitar voids that were scattered around many of the songs. Scott, accepted and brought a whole new aspect, musically, to each and every song.
Sick of writing lyrics with the same perspective and panicked over being boring, James coerced childhood friend Laurie Grace, to facilitate him in the melody and lyrical department. This helped create running dialogue within the music and provided for more interesting story telling; not to mention help ease James of his terrible stage fright and fear of fronting a band on his own. Finding a full time drummer for a band can be a daunting task. Luckily, Darius Iniguez, a friend of all previous band members, was more than willing to step in and fill the remaining spot. Darius, too, played in an earlier band with James and was familiar with his musical styling. After months of practice bass player, Chris Lopez informed members he would no longer be able to take part in the band. Keith Simmons, then was asked to fill the space that Chris had left and agreed to take on bass playing duties.
Distancing themselves from the all to familiar bands that populate Los Angeles and Orange County, Paper Plane is influenced by such bands as Death Cab For Cutie, The New Pornographers, Pedro The Lion and Dios Malos. The music that Paper Plane generates can be described as Poppy Somber Rock, walking the thin line between gloom and beauty. With songs that focus on self-doubt, boredom and religion and lyrics that conjure up thoughts of lost time, lost youth and lost love. Creating catchy guitar riffs through the clashing of electric and acoustic guitars, fusing romantic female harmonies over shaky male vocals, topped off with the perfect mixture of drums, keys and gliding bass lines.
With the band now formally in place, they are setting out to write, perform and potentially record new material. Paper Plane is excited and prepared to begin the next processes in their musical journey and eager to see where their potential will take them.
