    Elect Summer Starr 2008's Interests
GeneralUpcountry is, always has been, and always will be my home. I attended Makawao Elementary, Seabury Hall, and Maui Community College. I then moved on to the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa and acquired my Bachelor’s Degree in “Protecting Hawaiʻi’s Environment”. I am currently working towards my Master’s Degree in Political Science with a focus on Indigenous Politics and Sustainable Development. During my time on Oʻahu I organized, led, and developed two very influential environmental and political action groups. I spent time at the State Legislature working in the Public Access Office – a non-partisan, free service established solely to assist the public with understanding and participating in the legislative process.

Over these few years, I have noticed that much of what I love about Maui has been changing, and changing rapidly.

I see thoughtless development projects. I see that our threats of drought are more severe, and that innovative solutions have not been proposed. I see that we are not taking advantage of the many sources of renewable energy and abundant agricultural capabilities available to us. I see people I grew up with unable to make a decent living. I have seen reckless decisions made on behalf of our community, regardless of our sentiment.

I see the culture and the people that I love so much struggling to survive, unable to maintain the rural lifestyle that defines us.

What I also see is an opportunity.

I see an opportunity to keep Upcountry, Country while moving into the new century.

I see the possibility for smart growth, which incorporates environmental accountability, cultural sensitivity and affordable housing. I see the possibility for a thriving agricultural community, thrusting Upcountry into being the new ‘breadbasket’ of Maui.

I see creative solutions to alleviate pressure on water management. I see a multitude of renewable energy possibilities, bringing us closer to self-sufficiency. I see job opportunities for our youth in clean technology that would not only provide sufficient jobs and beneficial research, but would foster enhanced education. And most importantly I see an Upcountry that doesn’t have to lose its essence. I see an Upcountry where paniolo, farmers, small business owners, teachers, government employees, and the youth will be able to survive. I see how logical and feasible these solutions are, and have a strong passion to make these dreams a reality for Upcountry residents.

With my experience acquired through education, my work from within the walls of the Legislature, and my advocacy work from the ground up being a dedicated community organizer, I feel that it is my responsibility, my kuleana, to give back to Upcountry what Upcountry so graciously gave me; life.

It is for this reason I have decided to run for State House, District 12, Upcountry Maui.

As much as I would like to run and operate a campaign solely on my enthusiasm and passion, financial support will be needed. Your kōkua is much appreciated during this time. It is at this juncture that I am humbly requesting your assistance. Whether your donation be monetary, man/woman power, providing refreshments, lending a meeting space, or just talking story, spreading the word to friends, family, and coworkers, any support would be genuinely appreciated.

If you are able to provide 5 volunteer hours here, $25 dollars there, or even providing Komoda donuts, it all make a huge difference for a grassroots campaign.

This campaign is about Upcountry. This campaign is about the people that make Upcountry what it is today. This campaign is about our keiki, our kūpuna, our ʻohana, our kuleana, and the integrity of our ʻāina. Let’s work together to keep Upcountry, Country!

If you have any questions or concerns please don’t hesitate to contact me at: 808.572.IMUA(4682) or info@electsummer.com. Once again, mahalo nui for all of your support!

This is a campaign about the people of Maui, of Hawaii and about our sustainable future. This primary election we proved that REAL change is just around the corner. Rest safe in the knowledge that I am still going to be out there, fighting to protect our paradise that we love so much.
