Craig McFarlane, born in 1973 in Cumnock (Ayrshire, Scotland)..started accordion lessons aged four, first live gig,.aged 6 in 1979 at the "TUP INN" Cumnock, at the accordion & fiddle club. Passed the first four N.A.O. (national accordion association) practical & theory exams, also winning the under 12,s ayrshire championship in 1983...,& being in the first few in Scotland to move to the "free bass" accordion, with sister Morag, (who won the Bell trophy, Brittish Free Bass championship).
Craig moved onto the pipes aged 9, & played in 5 ayrshire pipe band, competing solo, & being placed in 7 piping competitions all under the age of 16.
First instructed by Wullie Ferguson, & Davy Kay in Cumnock, and the legendary Duncan Johnson, & Sue MacIntyre M.B.E...studying & competing in both "light music" and "Pibroch", (the ancient Highland style of piping)
He joined the 2nd Btn Scots Guards in 1989, serving as Infantryman, and piper, playing at all of the ceremonial events in Scotland and England, including a state banquet at Buckingham palace for the King of Kuwait, and on t.v, with Luciano Pavaroti. Leaving the army in 1994 with an exemplary discharge record, he moved almost instsantly to the one and only FASLANE PEACE CAMP! (permanent anti trident/nuclear submarine base on the west coast of Scotland, becoming heavily involved with the camp, he went to jail in Greenock for 2 months on remand for "clandestinely" swimming into the submarine base and boarding the polaris sub H.M.S. Renown, (wearing ful wet suit & mask), Also at this time was the Infamous anti M77 road camp at Pollock, Glasgow.. where all the peace campers were a regular fixture. He then lived & busked in near Kingston, & Brighton, moving up and down to Glasgow, becoming a well known face on the and musician on the protest and festival scene.
As well as attempting to get back to the high standard of piping previously (which did suffer in the chaos years after the Army!), he got involved with a few Legendary, more psychedelic musicians, attempting to create a "free style" type of playing, (which no doudt the old piping establishments would hate), this included many live slots with Daevid Allen (Gong, Planet Gong,University of Errors, Magick Brothers etc.), Nik Turner (Hawkwind), Steffe Lewry (Here & Now, Planet Gong ), and Mark Robson (Kangaroo Moon, Magick Brothers),UK.SUBS. & Glasgow Pictish hardcore punk band Sedition...
Several recordings, and two C.D,s have been done mixing styles of piping with Synthesisers including Basil Brooks ( Zorch & Steve Hillage Band) ,Didgeridoo,Djembe,Bodhran,Double Bass and vocals, also a recent recording for Joie Hintons, (Eat Static, Ozric Tentacles etc,...), new "Inverse Gravity vehicle album", & a recording session with EAT STATIC, which will be on a forthcoming album!
Craig lived in Glastonbury for over 10yrs, becoming part of the crew, and management of the famous Glastonbury Assembly Rooms for 9yrs, building up his own "ELEMENTAL SOUNDSYSTEM"..doing live sound for hundreds of events. He has recently moved back to Glasgow, Scotland,...to continue and build upon his Soundsystem, recording work, and live performances.

Decks...Memorable live events have included HERE & NOW (MANY TIMES),NIK TURNER (in various bands), Daevid Allen, (also with various bands), Arthur Brown, Zorch, Incredible String Band, & hundreds of other bands & musicians who have passed through, & lived in Glastonbury,..also loads of other gigs & parties in the area!
