This tradition started in the early 1800's well before heating was common place.
January being the coldest month,
men would grow their beards out
in order to jeep their faces warm.
Wives and daughters would caress their men's faces to share in the warmth.
Growing out your beard in the month of January was a sign of solidarity
and patriarchal strength, that one was able to care for and keep their hairless females warm.
Men are now encouraged to not shave
for month of January,
and grow their beards out.
Not as a sign of masculinity, but as a recognition
of the hardships endured by
those that came before.
