elio martusciello: aesthetics of the machine (excerpt)
The video-musical research that I have undertaken goes beyond the man’s "point of view-listening" to experiment what could be defined as the machine’s "point of view-listening" (aesthetics of the machine). Therefore, an aesthetics that privileges an "other-feel", the meeting with the "outerness", the utopia, an opportunity for discovery, growth and extension of man’s possibilities.
The audio frequency field constitutive of this work is out of the possibilities of our perceptive system; in fact it’s placed in the area of ultrasounds (up 20kHz) and of infrasounds (down 16Hz). For all the duration of the work, these sounds are generate at the maximum volume available for the digital systems (0dB). Therefore, this compositions is totally full, saturated, dynamicless, with a volume level always coincident with "fortissimo" (classical notation), from which the area available by the human perception is just excluded. What remains at our hearing? Only silence? All that we perceive in this work, instead, results to entirely be the discard, the drift, the limits of the technology and of our auditory apparatus, all that springs out of the interferences, from the collisions, the clashes of these iper-frequencies, their resultants, the difficulties and the noises that the system of sound-reproduction (amplifiers, loudspeaker, filters, etc.) produces, from the surrounding space (objects that vibrate), our same auditory apparatus and body (often is not our ear but our body, in his totality, that feels and vibrate).
Therefore…a pure “objective” sound (a simple “sinusoidal wave”), fully inorganic, inexpressive, beyond-human, a sharp, metallic object, that can also hurt, a totally “extraneous” sound (a limit-experience, sometimes toxic, harmful…but not only for the men but also for the machine).
Well, all that we listen in this work is the meeting point between man, his technological extension and the "outside" of our "feel"; an arduous way that carries us in a dark zone, perturbless (extraneous and family at the same time), outside of our mind and of our thought (which is also its interior).
The video is not a romantic counterpoint of the sound but only a technological sinesthesia (physic of the phase)

Studio Brutus/Citrullo Int./Taxonomy: H2O
H2O is a composition interpreting the theme of audiovisual crossover, thanks to a stratified execution of progressive passages: from video shooting, passing to a rewrite in digital graphics, finally focusing the interactive feedback with the shadows form of sound produced by the musicians. The visual flow develops and integrates with the music, producing a decidedly new, electro-digital, highly hibryd. H2O was born from a meeteng between a group of designers, programmers and videomakers with the music group Taxonomy.

elio martusciello: to extend the visibility

Price:£20.00
In a limited Edition of 2000 numbered copies this DVD comes in a threefold art DVD case with a full colour 48 page book offereng substantial exegetical essays (in English and Italian) by Tim Hodgkinson and Sebastiano Giacobello and additional artwork by Ale Sordi and Ester Curcio. It s is a fully integrated electronic composition/animation exploring and aestheticising the contemporary fact of the digital unification of visual and aural data. It is also a meditation on the earth, its fragility, order, chaos, art and hubris. In six explorations, using all manner of digital processing techniques Elio animates abstract sequences of imagery derived from satellite pictures of our beleaguered planet and a mixture of concrete and synthetic - always highly composed and processed - sound. It is neither a film with soundtrack nor a composition with pictures but rather a contribution to a still unfamiliar medium, a rather demanding medium. Essentially it is a domestic installation, or the C21 multimedia version of a small print edition.
Here’s a simple taxonomical list, without any intellectualism nor complex strategies to define anything. We explore the most varied instrumental techniques, technologies, and formal structures, according to our experiences both as listeners and musicians (and all this is perhaps more evident here than in our first record). That’s all. We believe that the art world in all its complexity is not different from that, even when it apparently looks for motives or goals and presents itself with complex conceptual schemes. In the end, it’s just the same simple, eternal game. We just wonder if this game is everything or nothing at all.

Tightly focused electroacoustic compositions that are austere, rich, strange and brilliantly executed. Elio has an ear like a bat and a serious antipathy toward cliché, and he never relies on repetition for structure; these pieces seem rather to grow out of themselves in surprising but somehow logical ways, like perfect exotic blooms. His is also a music of extremes, never theoretical but always grounded in the grain of the sounds themselves. Mostly highly abstract, there is also a daring tribute to Pierre Schaeffer here that is exquisitely judged. A quiet masterpiece.
Taxonomy: A global taxonomical machine
http://www.actuellecd.com
Price:25.00 CA$
Taxonomy (Martusciello, Lella, Fega) plays compositions and improvises, exploring the syncretism between different musical codes. Taxonomy always allows the whole to be divided up into its constituent parts. A line of shadow between osmosis and isomorphism. Martusciello is a member of the improvisation group Ossatura.
In the same spirit as Parasites (AM 096), this group chooses an electro-noise approach. The finesse of the mix, worthy of electroacoustic music, highlights the rich details, a dynamic palette ranging from clashing noise to silent tracks. The album, A Global Taxonomical Machine, offers a gripping blend of concrete noise, abstract electronic effects and acoustic sections. Martusciello work in the improv group Ossatura, a major act on the international avant-garde music circuit.
Places which do not appear on any map. Morphological analogies that lie between thought and micro-organisms. Strange correlations between the letters of forgotten alphabets and globalised (de-localised) languages. For us in the past all books, alphabets, signs, chemistry (both organic and inorganic), geography, religion, politics and journeys were only scenery of an experience, a dream or aspiration. Then we met by the same bookshelf of that same library.
We are not particularly cultured and so we confined ourselves to the task of taxonomy, the most arbitrary of taxonomies. We thought about compiling signs according to our desires. The resulting volume does not tell any story, or even reveal any truth or discovery. This is an illegible text, devoid of significance but with meaning. If, in some way, the world itself can be reflected in the myriad of small fragments that compose it, then this is the fragment that we have unearthed.
Very active in a number of groups and ensembles, and extremely versatile, the members of this trio live for improvised and experimental music. Elio Martusciello is a renowned electroacoustician, with several international awards under his belt. Besides electronics, Roberto Fega also plays tenor and soprano sax. He is a member of the political fanfare Titubanda and the multimedia collective Arturo, and also composes music for dance. Graziano Lella is best known as a bassist and a sax player. He has previously played in a punk band before joining the avant-rock group Dura Figura in 1997.

The second release from this abstract trio who mingle hard electronics with acoustic and processed percussion. A more focused, subtle aesthetic here, I think, than on their last also excellent - CD. These are finely tuned and seamlessly integrated sounds that have been crafted and, importantly, performed; this is essentially played music that had been painstakingly reworked, and bears still the deep qualities of interactivity and immediacy that created it.

Il 6-7-8 aprile 2009, al RIALTO SANT'AMBROGIO (Roma, Via di S. Ambrogio 4, presso Largo Argentina) terrò il seminario "IL SUONO E L'IMMAGINE. MUSICA, VOCE, RUMORE E SILENZIO NEL FILM", articolato in tre incontri intensivi (ognuno di 3 ore):
LUN 6 aprile ore 11:00-14:00
MAR 7 aprile ore 15:00-18:00
MER 8 aprile ore 11:00-14:00
