elipse is an Alternative Pop Rock band hailing from Chicago IL. They blend elements of Brit Pop, Alternative, Punk, and Hard-Rock, . Their first EP entitled Sleepless recalls Radiohead, Coldplay, The Strokes, Arctic Monkeys and more. To many, elipse is an anomaly. They cannot be pinned into any one category. One minute they’re piano Pop, the next they’re stratospheric stadium rock circa Oasis and Muse.
In the words of Eric Lutz (Elmhurst College Rock Critic) "Bands like these do not come around often, so when they do materialize, make the most of them".
Coming off two well received shows at Subterranean this past Summer, elipse is poised to have a break-out year in the Chicago music scene. Their singles "Proud Tears" and "Stop. I'm Out of Breath" are both receiving radio play on local radio stations including Radio DePaul and Elmhurst College Radio. They've also began regional touring in cities like Madison WI and Highland IN.
But's let's back up a minute before we move further. What the hell does elipse even mean? You might remember from High School geometry class that an ellipse with two 'L's is an oval type shape. But an elipse with one 'L' has no apparent meaning. I pried an answer out of Lead Singer Keith Newsham, "elipse is not an actual word. It can mean whatever you want it to mean. Thats how we tend to look at our music. We can write anything that we like and we don’t care about falling into a particular genre”. Indeed, the more relevant question
seems to be: Who the hell cares what it means? This band is making damn good pop music.
So what does it sound like? Take Brit Pop's sense of melody, combine it with a love for anthemic grandeur, and add in bloc party type dance grooves for good measure. This wouldn't give you elipse, but it'd get you in the neighborhood. The fact is it's impossible to describe all the ground the band cover in this brief EP. Listen from song to song and you'll hear 5 unique sounds that all fit neatly together. And if you can walk away without getting at least one of their infectious pop melodies stuck in your head, you're deaf.
The bottom line is this. elipse is going to challenge you. They'll challenge you to believe that a band can be whatever it wants to be.
The only rule is to make good music. They seem to be following that rule quite well.
