  • Bio

Netherlands-born Elisabeth Geel is a singer-songwriter with a personal guitar style and warm, powerful mezzo soprano vocals. As an artist she evolved by distilling influences from a broad range of musical genres. The structures and harmonies of her compositions contain clear elements of Brazilian music as well as American jazz-rock, funk and traditional jazz, yet she credits Joni Mitchell and Laura Nyro as major influences, "They are poets as well as great composers; masters of wordplay, emotional insight and creative use of harmony that helped frame my own vision." About her own songwriting she says, "I always strive to make music and words intertwine, like a true and strong embrace. Only this way the song can be that beautifully flowing vehicle to communicate effectively." Her love for music originated early in her life. At the age of twelve she started singing and playing guitar. After graduating high school she traveled to the US. It was the beginning of a two-year traveling experience that would have a major impact on her as an artist. She roamed from Alaska to the Southwest, developed her skills as a vocalist and songwriter, and began playing in music clubs. In the early nineties she continued her career in Europe, performing in clubs between Rome and Copenhagen, and since then she has performed at a variety of venues, from luxury resorts to clubs, theaters and music festivals throughout Europe, Asia, the US and the Middle East. She has exhibited her vocal skills as a duet partner and backup singer in various music productions, and has written music and lyrics for other artists. She has participated in festivals such as Veneto Jazz, Vicenza Jazz, UBI Jazz, Marca Jazz, Terramossa, Friuli Venezia Giulia Jazz, Marostica in Jazz, and the Dutch Jazz Competition. Elisabeth works and lives between the US and Italy. She spends most of the year in Sicily, where she lives with her husband Robert van Helden, father of DJ/remixer Armand van Helden. But my hairstylist taught me that the real light is anywhere, as long as people really communicate.

Bio:

Elisabeth Geel is a singer-songwriter with a distinctive guitar style and warm, powerful mezzo soprano vocals. Her music is characterized by complex jazz-influenced structures and harmonies and her cerebral, sometimes ironic, but straight-from-the-heart lyrics touch upon such themes as love affairs, world travel, and the struggle of an artist to survive in a world of indifference. She credits Joni Mitchell and Laura Nyro as early influences, but throughout her life she has been inspired by artists like Frank Zappa, Chaka Khan, Donald Fagen, Lisa Stansfield, Gino Vannelli and Sarah Vaughan. Elisabeth was born in the Netherlands. A two-year's stay in the US had a major impact on her songwriting and some her finest songs were inspired by this magical period. She traveled from Alaska to California and Arizona, singing in music clubs and developing her skills as a visual artist and illustrator studying with local artists. In the early nineties she continued her career in Europe, performing in clubs between Rome and Copenhagen, and ever since she has performed in a variety of venues, from luxury resorts to clubs, theatres and music festivals throughout Europe, Asia, the US and the Middle East. She has exhibited her vocal skills as a duet partner and backup singer on various CD's and has written music and lyrics for other artists. She has participated in festivals like Veneto Jazz, Vicenza Jazz, UBI Jazz, Marca Jazz, Terramossa, Friuli Venezia Giulia Jazz, Marostica in Jazz, Dutch Jazz Competition. Recordings: She recorded her first solo album entitled "SO COOL" in 2006 (MPrecords). As a guest singer and songwriter she appears on Zooga Jazz 2, featuring Fabrizio Bosso on trumpet (2006) and she recorded 5 tracks on Aaron Tesser's album "Lookin' ahead" (Irma Records, 2008). Her second solo album "PREFACE TO A DREAM" (2009) was produced by Elisabeth and the Schio Music Academy (Schio, Italy). The CD contains 11 new songs arranged for string orchestra and jazz quintet by Bruno Cesselli, Ettore Martin, Federico Malaman, Toni Moretti and Elisabeth herself. In the summer of 2009 she recorded her third solo album "NUMBERS" with Bruno Cesselli (piano), Mattia Martorano (violin) and Alessandro Turchet (upright bass), soon to be released. Elisabeth Geel performs in settings ranging from solo to quintet to string orchestra, always surrounded by top musicians. She has an energetic on-stage presence and loves to interact with her audience. Besides her passion for music she always had a deep passion for the visual arts. Her illustrations have appeared in books, magazines, company brochures and CD covers, but today she is dedicated mostly to painting. She has held numerous art shows and her works are owned by collectors all over the world. She lives and works in Tucson, AZ (USA). In 2009 she married Robert van Helden, father of the renowned producer, DJ and remixer Armand van Helden. EPK
