Led by Boston-born, Berkeley-based neyzen and bassist Eliyahu Sills, Qadim now consists of (from left to right as pictured in the attached) John Villa on frame drums and tablas, Rachel Valfer on oud and vocals, Eliyahu Sills on ney, bansuri, saz and vocals, and new member Faisal Zedan on Arabic percussion.
Influences
Persian music, Classical Hindustani, traditional Arabic, Jewish, & Turkish music. West African & North African, especially from Mali, Nigeria, Morocco, & Muaritania. Also, Eliyahu has spent many years absorbing and performing jazz and classic soul, and is deeply infuluenced by John Coltrane, Charles Mingus, Duke Ellington, Stevie Wonder, James Brown, Marvin Gaye, Jame Jamerson, and Bob Marley. His teacher, the master of north Indian bansuri bamboo flute, G.S. Sachdev is a huge influence as well.
ABOUT ELIYAHU: After studying jazz in New York, I fell under the spell of Sufi music and became a student of the ney, the reed flute of the Middle East, and the bansuri, the bamboo flute of India. In 2006, I made a 4-month pilgrimage to Turkey in search of a living ney master and had the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to study under Neyzen Omer Erdogdular and Neyzen Ahmet Kaya.
My musical styles span the globe. I have performed and recorded vibrant sacred music of the Middle East with Za'atar, West African folk music with the Palm Wine Boys, soul roots reggae with the Original Intentions, acoustic soul with Sparlha Swa, and revolutionary Hip-hop with Rebels Advocate.
I love performing for and teaching music to young people and have taught at The Mosaic Project and Omega Teen Camp.
ABOUT QADIM:
Named after a word found in both Arabic and Hebrew meaning "Eastern Wind," Qadim specializes in recording and performing modern interpretations of ancient mystical music of the Near East. Since first forming in 2006, the group has quickly built a standing room only following throughout the Bay Area and beyond by bringing together Indian, Iranian, Jewish, Moroccan and Syrian musicians to celebrate the common musical and spiritual heritage of the now troubled region's ancient cultures.
