A friend of mine introduced me to her daughter recently as "a rock star" and I wondered how she knew! How did she know? I've been secretly a rock star since 1976. I think the fact that I have been playing my stratocaster for a few years now could have given my secret rock star persona away! It's only recently that I've been turning up the volume on my Fender amplifier over at the studio where I practice and teach.
Don't get me wrong, I still play my acoustic Martin guitar almost every day. And it is easier to carry around then my amp and electric guitar. I mean I've been a public folk singer for more years than I will admit. I've been singing folk songs both original and Dylan-esque long enough to have the right to balk at folk music! Yes, balk.
BUT secretly I'm, as mentioned above, a rock star. Rock stars only need other rock stars. We don't care if the audience is listening because we are rocking out. Where as Folk singers are needy. I like not having a needy care about the audience. It puts me more inside the music. It's not about what the audience hears it's about what the rock star hears and if you are on the inside or the outside of a great rock star moment you KNOW it.
I've earned the right to these opinions and I also have the right to change my perspective at any given moment. Being a secret rock star is one of the best things that has ever happened to me.
